Understanding - Week 3

This was one of my favorite modules because I felt like I was able to connect this to so much of what I teach on a day to day basis. I saw many mistakes that my own students make and start to think about those in a new way. I also thought it was really interesting to think about all of the rules we give students (and are given in our own schooling) that don't always apply the more you get into complex mathematics. This module has informed my teaching so much this year already as I think about the way I teach students and how some of the quick or easy rules can create more confusion.

Individual or Community - Week 4

I thought this module was really important because it made me think about the different environments I have taught in and how that effects the student's experience. I thought this related very strongly to our unit from the week before which focused on understanding and misconceptions. Many of the misconceptions that happen are related to broad generalizations rather than specified instruction. It is so important to consider the needs of our specific students and where they are coming from rather than use a one-size fits all approach. It makes me think of the expression - trying to fit a square peg into a round hole - sometimes it feels like instruction is an attempt at this but it's so important to consider our students, their understanding and misconceptions and create something specialized on that.

Professional Noticing - Week 6

I really loved this unit. I thought that it connected so much to all of the work I did in my undergraduate classes and it really connected to our previous units. Knowing that students have misconceptions makes it SO much more important to practice professional noticing. When we as teachers take the time to pay attention to each thing our students are doing in their work, and their movements in class can help inform our instruction SO much more.

Complex Instruction - Week 7/8

This two week unit was another that I really enjoyed and felt like it has so many connections to previous units and my own life as a teacher. Complex instruction is connected for many reasons with the units I mention here. Seeing all of the mistakes and misunderstandings that students have - how some rules we give them when they are young can confuse them more as they get older really highlights the need for complex instruction. Giving students more diverse and open-ended work can help eliminate misconceptions. Professional noticing will help to inform our complex instruction because we have more knowledge of the work and ideas our students have. We can use that information to create complex instruction that will best support our students learning. And complex instruction also highlights and supports instruction that focuses on our students individual needs rather than the one-size fits all approach.
