In my Career Management class, I have my students create life maps of where they've come from, where they currently are, and goals for where they would like to go (college, career, live, children, etc.). The students really get creative with some of their maps and enjoy working with this hands on project. I usually hang them in the hall outside of my room and get tons of comments on the artwork. The students enjoy seeing their work out there too!

Since I'll be teaching High School, there may be some students that aren't motivated to continue their education. Showing pictures like these can show that there is something after high school and they can achieve it as long as they put their mind to it.

High school students are usually aware of the different social situations going on and are often times involved and impacted by the social problems happening in society. For high school students, having a safe space is extremely important as these are formative years and being in school for 6-8 hours a day, students need to feel safe in their sexuality, gender identity, race, everything. Schools need to be a safe space for students with mental illnesses and poc students. This picture was actually taken last year, and is missing a lot of names.

I took this photo of the view from Beacon Heights. I decided to get creative with it by writing a sentence I came up with on it that modeled the literary device of alliteration. As an English teacher, figurative language and literary devices will make an appearance often in my curriculum. Students need to learn how to connect these devices and their writing or poetry with real life imagery. Being able to create words from a photo or object that they see is a fun and interesting way for students to learn how to write and explore how they perceive things differently from one another. I could take many different scenic pictures such as this one and write an example for a different literary device on each one, showing my students all the tools and techniques available to them when they are writing.

I choose this picture because it inspired me when I took it. To me this states that everyone travels down different paths but as long as we keep pushing through then we can all end up were we was wanting to go in the first place. You obviously cant see the end but no one can when they start something that's why you have to keep going to get there. It will often be bumpy just like riding a train but eventually worth it.

My picture is an original piece of art that I made of a non-specific kind of tree that represents knowledge. I would bring this image into my classroom because it beautifully depicts the challenge, contrast, complexity, and growth that takes place when learning. I hope this image will encourage students to actively participate in the pursuit of knowledge to transition from a place of ignorance to a place of enlightenment and knowledge. Below, I will deconstruct my image.

The tree’s leaves and branches seem to be a series of swirls and dashed lines. However, entangled in the lines and dashes are the words “religion,” “sciences,” and “arts.” The green symbolizes the human brain and the grapple humankind has between believing, wanting proof, and wanting to create something worth believing in. The trunk of the tree is made up of the same swirling lines and dashes. The trunk supports the tree, or human brain, and is thus the brain stem connected to the spinal chord. The lines and rings on the trunk have blue and purple lines to more closely resemble electric pulses and signals sent among neurons.

I took this photo off of the parkway with my cat. As a future middle school science teacher I decided to add some text that would compare the relative ages of the subjects in the pictures. Hopefully this will make them reflect on their lasting impact on the environment. Further more I left it with a message of encouragement for students to go exploring themselves. I think it's important for students to see teachers practicing what they preach, and if I want them out in the woods exploring I should show them that it is okay and fun to do so.

In this image that I created on my computer, I wanted to have an image that focuses on grammar. Instead of having images that rely on definitions of each punctuation mark, it would be entertaining to have punctuation jokes. Even though I will be teaching high school, I understand that due texting and social media, proper punctuation becomes more scarce over time. In this case, It is my duty to remind students the importance of grammar. I wouldn't have a whole lesson on commas and punctuation, but it would be a good ten second reminder to use these for a good laugh and transition to more complex grammar exercises.
