Lesson integrating primary outdoor education/physical education with mathematics; Count on Me Book Walk 


I saw this lesson being used in the primary classes at my school in the outdoor education classes and the physical education classes. It is a book walk, so students go outside and read page by page of this story. The staff spread out the large pages of this book around the schoolyard. Each page prompts the students to look for math around them, like what different shapes you can find in the schoolyard: trees, play equipment, building, how many steps it takes to get from one page to another, etc.

  • Student roll a die 3 times to create a 3 digit number. They then trace base 10 blocks onto paper to create that number and in turn their own Mondrian art. 

  • Students use primary colours to paint their blocks. 

  • Students try to guess each others number by counting using the base 10 blocks drawn.

  • (I have seen an alternative version of this for older student where they use larger numbers and calculate the area and perimeter of the base 10 blocks they traced).
