Ask students to assess their own understanding of a lesson and hold up a green card if they are solid, a yellow card if they are not sure, or a red card if they are not getting it.

Avoid asking for volunteers to respond to questions (because it’s always the same students who volunteer). Instead, put students’ names on popsicle sticks or cards and call on them at random, they call this “cold calling”—calling on students whether or not their hands are raised—to ensure that all students are paying attention.
