• Named for its exclusivity: The name "Forbidden City" reflects that it was off-limits to all but the emperor, his family, and high-ranking officials and servants. Unauthorized entry was punishable by immediate execution.

• Imperial residence: The complex was home to 14 Ming and 10 Qing dynasty emperors until the last emperor, Puyi, was expelled in 1924, marking the end of imperial rule in China.

• Became a public museum: In 1925, the palace was converted into the Palace Museum, opening its gates to the public for the first time.
