This relates to westward expansion because when the United States expanded its territory out west, different regions in the country had different visions for how the land would be used, which was called sectionalism. The South wanted to continue to use slavery and the North wanted to use machines to do their work, not slavery. When Missouri wanted to become a state, the government debated with them about becoming a slave state, These debates ended in the Missouri Compromise, which added Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. As more states applied for statehood, the issue of slavery would resurface and contribute to more conflicts that would eventually lead to the outbreak of the Civil War.
