Her husband hoped she would be excited but instead she was not in a very good mood. The wife thought of having nothing to wear so her husband was willing to give her four hundred francs (dollars) to try and get a nice dress. She still keeps complaining about not having any jewelry so she might as well not go. The husband just wants her to enjoy herself for once so he brings up the idea of borrowing some from a friend. She heads to the ball and is enjoying herself until she realizes the necklace she borrowed from her friend is gone. Loisel goes to retrace the route they took to get home to see if it had fallen, he went to police headquarters to offer an award  but there was no luck on finding the necklace. Who knows what happen to it, so they go to see if they could possibly get it replaced. One necklace was the same but it cost 40,000 francs which they don't have so they ask if they could get it for a lower price. The jeweler offers it at 36,000 francs at the lowest price. They still don't have that kind of money so they work for it until they can afford it.
