He is a pit bull because he is very protective of his family. He is always there for them no matter what, and even if he wants to leave he will never abandoned them. He is very sweet and fun when he is with the people he is used to. But if his family is threatened he will go crazy and do anything to protect them. Also a lot of people assume he is tough and he they assume that he is a bad person, but on the inside he is a really nice guy. He is only tough when he has to be. People think he doesn't have very many emotions but he does, "Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn't make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn't seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad had been killed"(84). A main, clearly explained setting in The Outsiders is the church. It is used to show the boys hideout after Johnny killed the Soc, and it is showed as a building that they reach in the country after a long journey there. "It was a small church, real old and spiderwebby. It gave me the creeps."

Conflict
There is plenty of conflict in the book. A main conflict in the book is when Johnny kills the Soc, Bobby. It is used because the author wants to show how much Johnny cares for Ponyboy, he would even kill a man to save Pony. It is shown in a fight between some Socs and Greasers. Bobby is about to drown Ponyboy before Johnny stabs him, sending the rest running, and saving Ponyboy's life.

He grew up with his brothers and parents until his parents died. He had to take care of his little brothers after that. He had a scholarship for football, but he gave it up to take care of his brothers. He could be a Soc if he wasn't so caring for his little brothers. "...he was ashamed to be on our side, ashamed to be seen with the Brumlys, Shepards gang, maybe even us. Nobody realized it but me and Soda." (142

His goal is to make sure his brothers are okay. He makes sure Ponyboy gets good grades, and freaks out when his brothers are at unknown whereabouts. He helps Ponyboy when he is sick, and always hangs out with Sodapop. "'You wouldn't eat anything most of the time you were sick. How'd you like some mushroom soup?'"

Darrys flaws are the way he treats Ponyboy differently than Sodapop. Ponyboy was yelled at for being out later than curfew, and Darry slapped Pony out of anger. He has some anger issues and gets angrier at Ponyboy because he thinks he can get farther in life than Soda, so he pushes him alot. "Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door."

He is observant because he can always notice when something is wrong with someone in his gang. He is assertive because he is quick to let his brothers (mainly Ponyboy) know when he is mad at something they do wrong and what will be their consequences.

He is also always a little bit more aggressive than the others, and his manners are almost non-existent. 
-Darry is The Foil because in the beginning of the book when he hits Ponyboy it separates them, by the end of the book there bond is stronger than it has ever been before.
-Johnny is The Tragic Hero because when he makes the decision to go into the church to save the kids it leads to his death.
-Two-Bit is The Trickster because he is the funny guy in the gang. He is always cracking jokes and making people laugh.“Everything he was saying was irresistibly funny that he just had to let the police in on it to brighten up their dull lives"(12).
-Ponyboy is The Underdog because he is always in the wrong place in the wrong time at the wrong time, for example when Johnny killed the Soc  and Pony ran away with him, but then it all worked out in the end.
-Cherry is The Confidant because she exchanges private information from one side to another (especially from the Soc's to the Greasers.)
