While opening the shutter, a "stately raven" stepped in and "perched upon a bust of Pallas" just above the chamber door"(Poe, 38-41). In the story, the raven symbolizes grief. When it arrives, it represent the man's grief beginning to haunt him.

As he observed the Raven "sitting lonely" on the bust, he thought to himself that surely the raven will leave him, like his "hopes have flown before" (Poe, 55-59). The tree represents the isolation the man feels since the passing of his wife.

The narrator kept asking the Raven many negative questions, and he kept screaming at the bird even though the bird's only response was "nevermore". This shows his sign of insanity as he gets more aggressive towards the bird, and shows his grief towards his lost wife who he wanted to forget "from thy memories" (Line 83).
