I chose to photograph my Lorax keychain with a reusable glass jar and straw. The glass jar originally contained a locally made non-dairy probiotic coconut yogurt. I washed it and now use it for water. Buying locally sourced products helps lessen our footprint, because they are not made in huge factories. As well as that buying vegan is a more sustainable choice, because the meat and dairy industry cause such large quantity of air pollution. Reusing items such as this helps limit waste. I purchased my glass straw from a local store in Santa Cruz called eco goods. It is reusable and lessens my contribution of plastic which often times ends up in the ocean, harming animals and marine life.

I took a picture with my lorax in front of a sign reminding people to bring reusable bags when they shop. This is an environmental win because it lessens the amount of plastic that is used when packaging groceries. This picture was taken at 🤬 Hill, and they no longer offer plastic bags, only paper bags, which you have to pay for. So not offering plastic bags along with sprinkling little reminders to bring reuasbale bags all around the store and parking lot help a lot in the effort to lessen our dependency on plastic.

With more charging stations around it can be easier and more accessible for people to charge their cars. By installing new charging stations it encourages drivers to switch to all electric vehicles and if they do it will reduce the amount of gas being used and the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

I chose to take picture of water runoff along a sidewalk to illustrate an environmental detriment. While cement implemented draining systems make roads create a safer environment for vehicles, they also can disrupt amphibian travel. Fast moving water can sweep frogs away in their downstream currents or prohibit them from migrating to breeding ponds. Many amphibians only have a limited number of nights to travel and reach designated breeding areas, and the concentrated flow of water can impair that severely.

Palm oil is an edible veggie oil made from the fruit of certain oil palms. A few reasons it’s terrible are that in order to develop plantations for the oil, forests must be cleared which results in habitat destruction, and the loss of many endangered species. Along with this, the deforestation in tropical areas accounts for an estimated 10 percent of manmade CO2 emissions. The other day I was curious about how long it would take me to find something with palm oil in it at Safeway. My answer was approximately 3 minutes! It’s insane how such a damaging substance is in so many products. I wonder what would happen if everyone knew they were reducing biodiversity simply by buying a nutrition bar. Always read the labels!!!

This past storm has changed a lot of the beaches near us, one example being Capitola Beach. A lot of sand has been pulled out, and with bigger waves and high tides, the water has been coming up further on the land, which is causing concerns of flooding in the Capitola Village. This highlights the natural ecosystem service that beaches usually provide as a buffering area between the ocean and coastal development, and the loss of this when beaches experience severe erosion during storms.

This picture is an environmental win because the county of Santa Cruz is trying to balance between flood relief and sustainable conditions for endangered organisms that use the San Lorenzo river such as the Steelhead Salmon. Every year the river has to be breached to prevent flooding. Santa Cruz county has been working on a way to do this without harming the steelhead population that is dangerously small. Hopefully, the steelhead population will grow back because the San Lorenzo steelhead run used to be a major social gathering and Santa Cruz Highschool would even let their students out early to watch the steelhead.

This is a picture of my lorax with shampoo that contains no sulfates. There is a sulfate by the name of sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate and is very common in hygienic products, especially shampoo. It also happens to be made from palm oil, which is harvested in a very harmful and often unsustainable way. The palm oil industry is linked to many issues that include deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced. The shampoo brand that I use, however does not contain any sulfates. The brand Shea Moisture makes products that will not have a negative impact on the environment or on humans. On top of omitting sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and mineral oils from their products, they are also cruelty free and do not test on animals. They also give back to the community where their brand was created, which is Bonthe, Sierra Leone. Every purchase from Shea Moisture contributes to funds invested in community commerce programs. They source their ingredients sustainably, empower women in the communities their brand was made, and exclude harmful ingredients, all which contributes to an environmental win!

I believe it's an environmental win; the fence lines the walkway to the beach, featuring signs posted that ask visitors to avoid climbing the sand dunes and respect the environment. People can accidentally trample native plants and disrupt sand movement on dunes when they go off path, and it's important to be aware of our movements and be respectful to nature.

This is an environmental win because this simple faucet attachment lessens the amount of water used every time the faucet is turned on. This can help to keep water bills low as well as help to prevent the depletion of groundwater, which is a precious resource that can take years to replenish, and help in times of drought. Turning off the faucet when not in use, combined with a water efficient faucet can significantly help in the effort to achieve sustainable water use and to prevent depletion of precious water.

Eating and growing organic food is an environmental plus! Organic food often has more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants and they can reduce your exposure to artificial chemicals, hormones and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Also, if you eat organic you can save water as well. In order to grow organic crops you need healthy soil. Due to this, healthy soil holds water better than overworked soil, and it will limit erosion, and evaporation. Therefore if you eat organically it benefits your health and you can save water in the process.

This is good because it prevents flooding in streets, but it is also bad, because any form of pollution such as oil (as seen on the bottom half of this picture) can be washed away when it rains, and end up in these drains and eventually in the ocean, negatively affecting marine life. It is great that these signs are placed near these drains to spread awareness to people that anything they leave in the streets will ultimately end up in our ocean. It was upsetting to see so my areas on the pavement, that were close to the drains that had large quantities of oil.

As water evaporates from the surface of the earth, it rises to the atmosphere and condenses into rain in the clouds. This rain also flows into freshwater zones such as rivers, reservoirs and lakes, while also infiltrating the ground to form groundwater which we use to get our drinking water.

People may not acknowledge how much this is an issue at first glance, but everyday this leaky faucet can wate up to 5 gallons of water a day and 2,082 gallons per year. Regardless the environments state is, whether it’s in a drought or is experiencing rainfall, each drop that is wasted and unnoticed is another step for people across the globe who have to walk a great distance to acquire this valuable resource. This is why every household toreplace knozzles, faucets, and shower heads with newer wastefree ones so we do not take our natural resources for granted

A compostable cup: a great step in the direction for sustainability. Plastic bottles and containers pollute our water sources, harm aquatic wildlife like albatross birds, and can take 450 years to decompose. Compostable cups, in contrast, take 180 days or less to decompose. The downside, however, is that they have to be taken to compostable facilities in order to decompose in an effective manner, and such commercial locations may not be available. Support for products like compostable cups will help encourage expansion of facilities and reduce plastic and act as a great step forward in protecting our environment.

It’s a natural gas powered electricity generation plant which relates to our unit due to natural gas being a nonrenewable energy source. When compared to coal, natural gas plants are better for the environment because they release 50-60% LESS CO2! This is slightly an environmental win also because the two towers (stacks) as seen in the photo no longer generate power, but are still standing.

This is an environmental win because solar energy is renewable, inexhaustible, and sustainable compared to other energy sources. These solar panels can help to supply our school with energy
and electricity in an environmentally friendly way. This relates to our unit because coal is the most common fossil fuel and it is often used for electricity. While coal is convenient to utilize, it can have damaging effects of habitats, food chains, living organisms, air quality, etc, and it is nonrenewable. Solar energy is a much more sustainable way to power our school compared to the fossil fuels we're learning about this unit & it’s great our school is utililizing the great benefits of solar panels!

This really is something to think about, and makes you question more about all the pollutants that humans put into the earth and atmosphere. Reducing co2 emissions is so important, and it especially comes to mind in our nonrenewable unit learning about coal. It may be cheap now, but in the long run, it will cost so much more to preserve and live on earth that is going to have raised almost 4 degrees!! Good luck everyone, I hope there are some solutions to this and that they happen soon

However, it's a fantastic source of passive heating, as it faces the sun for most of the day, collecting its heat and storing it insulated walls to provide warmth. The energy retained in the room makes it an energy efficient source of warmth and helps save on the use of other methods that require fossil fuels, like a fireplace powered by natural gas. (I took this photo when the sun was beginning to set, so it looks a bit darker than it usually does).

Unplugging appliances when they are not in use is a great way to reduce the amount of energy waste we create and improve our energy efficiency. Only about 16% of all commercial energy used in the United States produces useful work, so making sure that we are using our energy efficiently is important to help fix this. Unplugging appliances is a free and easy way to do so, and it will also help you save money when it comes to paying for the amount of energy you use.

These solar panels likely provide much of the schools energy needs, lessening the electricity bill along with the need to produce that electricity, most likely through power plants.

Below is a picture I took during Spring Break of Pinnacles National Park, an area that was set aside as a National Monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt until recently promoted to Park status. The fact that the U.S. has 84.6 million acres of land set aside to preserve wilderness and offer areas for recreational hiking is a huge environmental win; as urban and industrial spaces continue to grow, it's difficult to find areas for green spaces and maintain opportunities to explore nature. It's really important to preserve and continue protecting these beautiful places for both the animals that live there and for the generations of people that will follow us (hopefully).
(My lorax has long since been lost)

In the photo, my Lorax is in an airplane flying back from my trip to Chicago. A lot of people are afraid of the risk of dying in a commercial airplane. In doing so, they are not accounting to the fact that there is a 1 in 9 million chance of that happening while driving with a seatbelt is a 1 in 6,070 chance. It’s interesting how people continue to both overestimate and underestimate risks on a daily basis. But also! I think the plane was at the lower region of the stratosphere when I took this photo so yay for good ozone!

This is an environmental win because consistently using reusable bags can help reduce waste when grocery shopping. Food products and groceries already produce so much waste from their packaging, and using plastic/paper disposable bags at checkout can increase that waste. Switching to reusable bags, however, creates no excess waste and can be reused time and time again when shopping, which makes it a great environmental win!

During this unit I discovered that sulfur dioxide is present in dried fruit— especially dried apricots. Of course I discovered this as I was eating my dried apricots, which made me wonder why. Sulfur dioxide helps preserve the fruit, helping it last longer. This can be negative, because sulfur dioxide can cause negative health effects for the respiratory system such as trouble breathing, irritation as well as aggravating conditions such as chronic bronchitis. The picture below is my dried apricots, containing sulfur dioxide. :(

My Lorax is in front of my recycling bins. My family and I try to buy packaged products that are recyclable versus not, so we throw the least amount of trash away as possible. As sanitary landfills are usually the cheapest and most used option in the US, they fill up quickly and are not abundant. We try to do our part to contribute as little as possible to them.

Recently my mom purchased these reusable produce bags, and I could not be any happier! Choosing to buy items that can be reused time after time such as metal straws, metal water bottles, and fabric bags can truly help to reduce the accumulation of waste that we as humans create. By using these bags, we are refusing to use the plastic ones that are available, and rather we are reusing these lovely ones.
