When driving anywhere in Barrie (mostly downtown area) there are many homeless people that are looking for food, water, clothing, or money. I often don't look their way so I don't feel as guilty of not giving them what they are asking for. This is an example of indifference as I am pretending to not notice them staring through my car window.

Local Indifference - Barrie City Council + Homeless Population

This bill also restricts camping in city parks and panhandling. According to Jennifer van Gennip, a member of the Barrie Housing and Homelessness Justice Network, this bill is “undemocratic and mean” and “criminalizes providing survival items to unhoused people on public property with zero public engagement.” This displays an indifference towards the homeless by the city council and mayor Alex Nuttal. It’s wrong and completely unjust for these actions to be taken.

Greek Coastguard Threw Migrants Overboard To Their Deaths, Witnesses Say

This article discusses the horrific events that are occurring in Greece at the start of 2024. The Greek coastguards under the orders of their government (and threatened by punishment) are forcefully turning away migrants. Greek officials are persistent in rejecting these allegations of illegal actions of “push backs,” which means driving the migrants back to Turkey or other places. There are multiple instances where coastguards are putting migrants on rafts and dinghies that have holes, no motors, or improper closure of valves and leaving them out in the middle of the ocean to die. There are even cases of migrants being thrown directly into the salty waters or hunted down on the Greek islands. The police would be dressed in black or civilian clothes (undercover) with everything but their eyes covered. There was no indication that these men were coastguards until they brought their targets back to the shore or post. These actions are despicable and completely unacceptable. The Greek government and coastguards are being indifferent by not having any concerns with the fact that they are putting these migrants' lives at risk or directing them to their death beds.

Throughout the years, I've become indifferent towards my father. If he calls me, which isn't often, I dodge them because he doesn't have anything good to say, constantly talks about himself, and continues to complain about his life to me. I don't share anything personal about myself as he has never showed any interest in my life. He isn't invited to any special events anymore as he always has a last minute excuse not to be there. I feel indifferent towards him as I don't have any concern or sympathy for him or his actions.

Local Indifference - Bradford + Exclusion of Autistic Student

'Hurts my soul': Parents Say Autistic Son Excluded From School

This article takes place at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Bradford, who sent home an autistic 14 year old (grade 9) without a return date because he was “a harm to himself and others by wandering the halls.” This caused frustration among the student’s family as this has never happened before and it wasn’t warranted. This student had the right to go to school, but according to a board member the school can dismiss a child under certain circumstances. His disability wasn’t a problem for his elementary school the year prior. After much frustration, his family applied for a transfer which was rejected. Indifference played a huge role in this as the parents are still fighting with different school boards to provide their child with the proper education and care. Therapy and other help services have cost this family a lot of money and is on the path of leading them to losing their home. This is completely unacceptable and unjust as there was no reason for the exclusion to have occurred. It seems like the school boards are indifference and turning a blind eye to this poor kid that needs help and education.

Global Indifference - Japan + Undocumented Migrants Emergency Care

Emergency Care Accessibility For Undocumented Migrants in Japan: Why Are They Not Covered?

The article listed above talks about the disregard for undocumented migrants emergency care accessibility. Japan offers accessible healthcare resources to individuals with legal status but undocumented migrants are excluded because of legal constraints. There have been 2 situations that have been documented in this article that’s results have ended deadly. 2 undocumented migrants have died because hospitals have refused to treat their emergency healthcare needs. This is in violation of their human rights and a perfect example of indifference as they could’ve prevented their deaths but instead they allowed it, all because of possible financial consequences. The fact that undocumented people don’t have access to emergency care, makes them even more vulnerable than they already are. It’s horrific that the government has overlooked these incidents and hasn’t already done something to prevent this from happening again.

There are a lot of things that you can do in your community to solve some problems. I could research the problem and try to find possible solutions and bring it to the city. I could advocate and raise awareness of the problem to voice opinions if the situation was just or unjust. I should volunteer to help out in my community and get involved to make a better difference. For example, help hand out food to the homeless.

It's very hard to make change by myself but if I got a group going, we could approach different topics and provide solutions. I would seek other people's thoughts and opinions to try and come up with a collaborative solution. I could raise awareness and voice the problems across the world and not let it get swept under the rug and forgotten about. And to make a real change I would need to seek help from government officials and/or communities to have a bigger voice and have the ability to make it happen.
