Today’s session Introduced the basic characteristic of the World Wide Web, going through a brief timeline of how the internet came to be. Evolving into a network where people around the world can connect and come together and discuss various topics of interest such as their favourite film.

I learnt the three components of websites that effect the experience of the user: content so the information, design so the layout that attracts and engages the user, and behaviour so how the user interact with the website so this could be shortcuts or levers eg clicking icon taking u to a different part of the page.

I was able to create and design my own website, following the brief of a coming of age film so that teens my age should watch at least once in their life. Through the pixlr software, I created my own images for the back ground of the website, then uploading the desired pictures on to codepen, which had the template four sections ‘intro, story, actors, trailer’.

The design followed the chronological order of the film but also the most aesthetically pleasing Shots that capture the childlike and dreamlike nature of the film: chicharo with haku the dragon, the flower bush scene, her encounter with the ghost people and finally the train on water scene as I embedded the trailer on to the page. The typography was nostalgic as the quote “once you’ve met someone, you never really forget them” complimented the coming of age theme.

At first, using code was quite difficult as a simple mistake could alter the whole page e.g. not closing the code, and the jumble of number made it difficult to identify where it went wrong.

But towards the end I would say I definitely improved, once I realised the HTML ‘details’ were set like a Russian doll system- an overall container but smaller parts underneath that heading. The CSS, style had to match the the html eg the information or paragraphs would be in h2 so to change the colour or font of that para would be in CSS would also be in h2.

Overall it was a new experience and i learnt new skills but I don’t think I would be able to focus for that long. But perhaps with more practice I can move pass the basics and be able to put more effort in the creative process of the practical

journalism Reflection

We first started the session with discussing what is considered news and should all information be revealed to the public. Despite what makes headlines through out generations, some key features are prioritised e.g. it’s has to be new and factual and creative.
We watched a ted talk about missing girls from the bokoharam tribe and we analysed how she delivered her story; stating it’s trustworthy as she personally visited the missing girl families and gave timed narrative account on how they were abducted. However this is only half the reason why her story evokes such a response making the situation a global crisis. She used sympathy, igniting a more human connection with the story.
We also started drafting our own feature about an event soon to happen in our lives as an important characteristic of a journalist is always having our ears, eyes but also our minds open as a story could be found in a normal day which many others can relate to or be interested in.
After discussing with one another we discovered through the uses of new technology and social media, we consume news all the time, with one small tap we’re teleported to events happening in different parts of the globe. But this does raise questions how much news is healthy? and what is harmful to releasing to the public?
The final activity we participated in mini interviews with our partners, asking journalist questions about a personal object we carry around in our bags, and then create a separate story in a way that would catch onlookers attentions.
I really enjoyed this practice as it was very interactive and new perspective of what being a journalist is. However I did find the creative writing part quite daunting as you are expected to write very quickly but perhaps with a little more practice I will be more confident in publishing my own story.

Today’s sessions introduced a contemporary approach to illustration, explaining the process most illustrators go through when creating designs. The process outlined three key steps: researching, developing and making therefore encouraged a creative environment where we could build on our ideas.
The first step ‘researching’ instructed us to search up images and artist’s personal work for inspiration, such as 1950s monster movie posters as the colours and extreme facial expressions presented wider range of detail than a simple smiley face. I also enjoyed viewing other artist work on the website “it’s nice that”

My team created a short horror film, called ‘someone’, following main character Nina as she feels someone is stalking her at school. Despite having a short amount of time to plan, film and edit We successfully followed the brief of presenting three different shot sizes and creating a clear narrative arc for the viewer to follow. We spent majority of the time planning and retaking shots so we were unable to assemble the shots in a more unsettling way, however for a first time I am pleased with how it came out. The practice leader complimented our technical skills, such as composition, use of white colour (background matching Nina outfit) and mirror shot. A few improvements we could make was the establishing shot is kind of dizzy as it’s close to being a 360° rotation, as Nina walks into the building there’s a time jump so if she enters with her right foot her next step should be left as it’s cleaner and when Nina tripped off camera the next shot should be her about to fall on the floor, not her already lying down. These editing choices are important thing to consider when assembling shots as we want the viewers attention to remain undisturbed, (unless you want them to notice).

On my walk home, I decided to go on a walk through the small park. The autumn morning was quite warm and the church in the background compliments the peaceful scenery. The composition is important as the pavement in the foreground is same shade as the church and the vibrant greenery is highlighted but sunshine.

During the short session we covered the basics of photography. Learning techniques on composition such as the rule of thirds- where you create a grid with 9 boxes so the picture can be focused in specific boxes, to appear more neater.
Another technique was the golden ratio. Where the eye of the viewers naturally follows a spiral, first slowly seeing a wider area and then looking deeper at one specific detail. This technique creates a more aesthetically pleasing effect for the viewer.
Colour theory where opposites on the colour wheel compliment each other making them stand out, such as blue and orange.
These techniques are really useful in all forms of art therefore I would like to improve on these skills.

The first exercise, we were asked to explore the campus, picking one colour and finding items to be used in our short story. This approach made the exercise less intimidating as we were encouraged to share items with our partner and just jot down the first idea that came to mind. It simplified creative writing to expressing what we visioned in short sentences. However it was quite fast paced, the stories came out silly.

Horror film and pitch

Each person on my table created a character (someone who’ve they’ve met, a character that left a strong impression on ourselves) one was Sofia a snobbish and condescending girl. Sumaiya a true anarchist mind that has a nihilistic perspective of life. Courtney that tried too hard to fit in with an older crowd, unknown to the consequences. And lastly Audrey, a book smart and blunt girl that priorities her academic than social life.
Creating a horror script and pitching it to the rest of the class.
Our story was set as a accommodation party where the girls are flat mates ready to settle into their new school life. However the twist is that during the party, sumaiya summons a demon to complete her homework. Believing the ritual has failed she leaves unfazed and joins the party.
After some time whilst the girls clean up once everyone has left, Sofia is first to encounter the demon resulting in her screaming, alerting all the other girls. They believe it’s just Sofia’s usual antics being dramatic over small thing but once they see a glass break and the electricity they become uneasy. They go to other dorms to see if anyone else is dealing with the same issue, soon discovering they’re are completely alone in the building.
No service or people the girls anxiety and adrenaline rises, determined to stay alive, they’re chased by the demon to the roof, without realising Sofia tripped on the stair case. Once the three girls meet at the top and realise Sofia missing the worry the demon has killed her. But just in queue Sofia comes through the door, but something seems a bit off. (She’s possessed but they don’t know that)
We wanted incorporate humour into our story, using upbeat music for the cause scene and an aesthetic similar to the shinning for the creepiness. 4 teenage girls who must put aside the differences and survive the night reminiscent of people joining the daunting life of university and just trying to survive will hopefully relate to a teenage/ young adult audience and the budget for the film would be student friendly as it can easily be filled in an accom and majority of time would be on editing, creating an effect that evokes strong reactions from the audience.

I enjoyed the session as there was a lot of freedom of expression. Through out we connected with stories and it’s importance or preserving history and culture. Especially during a time that effected the globe significantly, the pandemic being about a new wave of change where people have to accept this ‘new normal’. I found the skills I have learnt through this session will hugely help with other media forms such as tv as the creative planning process is just as important as the execution.

Due to the strike, I had to carry on this session independently, following the instructions on the practice outline. Creating art that capture the attention of listeners is a unique talent that fascinates me, as the way people can express so much through their voice, allowing the listener to interpret images associated with the speech. For example audio visuals that cast a sense of calmness before going sleep, pop radios speaking enthusiastically, making the atmosphere exciting and new form of media in podcasts, giving detailed account of special events like an unsolved mystery.
I would say I have the least amount of experience in this area, as I’m not very confident in the sound of my voice, often times being called monotone or stuttering. However meeting new people and sharing stories of our background perhaps will help me open up, and develop this interpersonal skill that will be useful creating interesting stories for potential tv plots.

A utopia far from our current reality that limits our potential, instead my dream world would let creativity thrive giving all people an equal chance of opportunity.
Corrupt old tories wouldn’t sanction laws that benefit their selfish needs, instead The world would be built by scientists and artist working along one another.
The streets clean and the sky clear, hearing the birds chirp their sweet song as people greet each other like family.

Due to the strike, I had to carry on the practice independently. I saw the evolution of animation, from Disney’s 1938 Snow White and the seven dwarves, to Wes Anderson’s 2010 fantastic mr fox. i was familiar with his work as a director, but seeing how he was able to demonstrate his creative vision through animation, added a more seamless and whimsical touch as through animation the limitations. animation is often targeted towards children as a high stimulus art form but i believe people should be more open minded and search for animated films which they enjoy and understand the effort put into making them. are endless through I’ve always been fascinated by animation and the work put into them, hours of planning and dedication for the creative process is very admirable.
