I have had students in the past that have had difficult names, tell me I can just call them "Billy" or "Johnny" and I dont have to learn how to say their actual name. Students in class would say "yeah that's what we call him because his name is super hard to say". I have never done this. If I expect my students to say my name correctly, I can honor and respect them enough to say their name correctly.

Because so many of our teachers have not experienced ELL students in our classrooms, this is particularly important to consider. New students are common, but new ELL students have different needs in order to feel welcomed.
