Evolution - The process of change over time. 

hox genes- a subset of homeobox genes, are a group of related genes that specify regions of the body plan of an embryo along the head-tail axis of animals. Hox proteins encode and specify the characteristics of 'position', ensuring that the correct structures form in the correct places of the body.

Charles Darwin  - Suggested the theory of evolution/natural selection.

Uniformitarianism  - The idea that the geologic processes we see today are the same ones that have shaped the Earth for many years. 

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck  Proposed hypothesis that organisms could change during their lifetime by selectively using or not using certain traits. 

Acquired characteristics  Traits altered by an individual organism during its life

Artificial selection  A process in which nature provides the variations, and humans select those they find useful

Adaptation  Any heritable characteristic that increases an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in an environment

Fitness  Describes how well an organism can survive and reproduce into its environment 

Natural selection-the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution.
