5. Values, Morals, and Ethics in Leadership

· What ethical or moral issues do you anticipate encountering in your leadership role? How well prepared do you think you are for dealing with these issues?
As a leader, even if I do not get into council, I anticipate I will have to deal with my friends making me choose between doing the morally right thing or letting them get away with the wrong things. I know that when I choose to tell on them or if I get them into trouble that I will lose friends. However, I also trust that the right friends will understand that it is morally right and what I did was morally right. I think I will also have to deal with people thinking a certain way of me, maybe scary or as authoritative. This might make people dislike me but I think decision making therefore becomes a lot more important. I think I am prepared to tackle these difficulties because I know I am doing the right thing in the end. I think that is what matters the most that I understand that despite the consequences I have to stand up for what is right. This is one challenge I think I will have to face but I think I know how to overcome.

· What does being fair mean to you? And how do your actions back up that belief?
To me, being fair is about treating everyone equally with no stereotypes whatsoever. I think it is important that I have no preconceived notions about anyone so that I can treat everyone equally and in a fair manner. My actions back up this belief because I always try to be open minded and have no prier thoughts about anyone so that I can treat them fairly. I believe that this is important that we treat everyone fairly without being bias because it ensures that the sole factor is related to what we need to get done and it also helps everyone to feel treated well. It is important to be fair especially as a leader because a leader has some amount of authority and misusing it because of stereotypes or other reasons is wrong. The authority bestowed to us is important to honour and it is necessary for us to take action solely based on others actions and nothing else. I think that by treating others fairly we can make an inclusive society and be more other-centred and accepting.

· Who do you know in school who really treats others with fairness?
My debate senior. She never lets her judgement of others affect the way she treats others. She is always fair and accepting of others. She tries to be inclusive and is not hasty to judge others. She always tries to be a good role model through her beliefs by portraying her beliefs through her actions. She carries through and always treats everyone as equally as possible with the least amount of judgement as possible.

Teacher presentation, "Story of Light" 19th Jan 2022

Icebreaker >
a councillor stood at the back of the room and the teacher asked everyone to off the lights and close the curtains, ensuring no light came in. another councillor stood at the front. The teacher asked the councillor at the back to use her hands to tell the councillor in front her phone number. They were not allowed to speak or anything just using their hands. This removed the eliment of light. They terrier but could not get the phone number correct. This depicted what light does as it illuminates our lives.

Why do you think that the school chose the theme "Let Our Light Shine"?
I think this is because the school wants us to know that no matter how lowly we think of ourselves there is a light in each and every one of us that we can choose to show to everyone to illuminate the world just as light itself does. I’m theory light is something that helps us see things clearly and as best as possible. The light inside us, if shown, shows who we truly are too. This may be why the school chose this theme to reassure us all that we all mean something and have something great in us.

What do these words mean to you?
These words mean

1] Invisible light

Light that cannot be seen.

It is invisible but still important.

What does that have got to do with us?

Sometimes, a leader does not have to be someone who is obviously doing something. They can be quietly helping someone without being applauded or rewarded for it. It can be silent leadership and a person does not have to be extroverted to be a good leader.

2] In the invention of light why there were some obstacles or failures.

The light could not be sustained

The light was too bright for practical use

They did not have a good vaccum

There was insufficient supply of electricity

What does that have got to do with us?

We should sustain the light by being a leader every day, every moment of our lives not just in council meetings or on duty. We have to be the same leader everywhere.

Suitable level of brightness for practical use. We have to be helpful to others and not just think of ourselves and care for ourselves being the centre of attention

Good vaccum system. The environment that council and school and our family and friends create for us is very important.

Sufficient supply of electricity. There has to be love and care for everyone in the community.

Something that just stuck with me that the teachers mentioned was that “it is okay if you can’t be a leader today, keep trying for the future”. It meant a lot to me because at that time I felt like I was not a good leader or a good councillor in fact. I felt that I had disappointed my teachers. These words encouraged me to keep going until finally I got back on track this week.

Ms Yang's presentation about being a servant leader.
Ms yang started by defining what a servant leader is:
A servant leader is a type of leader that believes that the followers are on top and the leader is at the bottom. This is only one belief of what a leader should be. A servant leader basically prioritises the followers above the leaders.
Ms Yang then asked us to join a mentimeter code and asked us what a servant leader means to us in a few words:
Some of the common words included:
- patience
- the idea of being others-centred
- empathy
- caring
These defined some characteristics of a servant leader.
Ms Yang then showed us a video which portrayed people in a city doing kind things and creating a chain reaction. This shows that there was no real leader but everyone took initiative and was impacted and influenced by other people's kind acts.
She asked us to reflect with our group and voice out our ideas after which she explained to us that this relates to us because it is the idea of doing something good and not expecting anything in return which related to the idea of a servant leader in terms of the selflessness and others-centred view they must have.

defining a leader

· What does it mean, to you, to be a leader?
To me a leader means someone who is able to inspire actions amongst others. A leader is someone who helps those in need. If for example in a school context, your classmate is absent, keep their worksheets and take notes for them. It is when one is responsible and able to handle themselves then one can help others. When you help someone this shows that you are capable of handling yourself well and I believe a leader should do that. A leader has to be someone trustworthy first before they are able to take charge. To me taking charge means showing others the way not stealing the spotlight or doing things to be the centre of attention. Being a leader means you show others what the right thing to do is so that they follow suite and this is where a peaceful environment is created. This is similar to good political leaders. They model the way by taking actions for the country and they are able to do so and gain authority by the trust entrusted in them by those around them. A leader to me is someone who is able to handle themselves well and as a result is able to tackle situations and help others. It is important to me to be a leader because there are definitely certain flaws in the community and by gaining people’s trust the right way you can attempt to fix these problems and make the environment a better one for everyone to live in. This is why leaders usually posses certain similar characteristics. These include, being responsible, trustworthy, taking initiative and not letting things go past so that change is made, empathy, passion to carry on. A main thing for myself is that there should be a shared vision or goal that all leaders must posses which is to make the environment a better place for everyone. I believe when one’s intentions are noble and they carry out these intentions in a good manner people will respect them and trust them so that the leader then stands out and as a result has the authority to crate change. Since so many people believe in this leader, they will rally together with the leader to create positive change.

· What does being an “effective” or “successful” leader mean to you?
Typically, being a leader means that you have a goal to benefit your followers, a vision. Being an effective leader does not necessarily mean achieving this goal 100% but rather working towards the goal and trying your best to make a positive impact. A successful leader does not have to achieve some kind of monumental change it is understandable if goals are not met but a certain result or a positive impact of any shape or size has to be seen. Usually, this is equal to the amount of effort put in. So being an effective leader means that one strives to achieve a good result and a positive impact on their followers.

An effective leader is also someone who has only good intentions and no selfish or evil thoughts. They have to take others needs into account before doing things. This is important because having bad intentions causes a leader to be selfish and disregard others needs. This makes a leader take certain actions that may cause the downfall of the group they are leading. However, a leader who has their community's best interest in heart will only take helpful actions and will be able to cause a positive change in the community.

· What defines a person of character?
For myself, I believe that there are no bad people, people just do bad things sometimes. What defines a person is not these mistakes but whether they repeat it or learn from it. A person of character will learn and grow from their mistakes. A person of character has the courage to admit what they did is wrong or bad. For example, if a leader punishes someone innocent, they should have the courage to speak up and admit what they did was wrong regardless of the consequences. They will have think of others and will ensure that their actions do not negatively impact the rest of the community. A person of character is an others-centred person and one who learns from their mistakes. I think this because even if you are not an authoritative figure and you make a mistake it is important that you mend your actions and do damage control. For example, if you say something rude to someone in the heat of the moment you should have the courage to ask for forgiveness. This does not take back your actions or your words but helps yourself understand that what you did is wrong and prevent yourself from repeating the same mistakes again.

· What does being a leader of character mean to you?
A leader of character to me is something close to the idea of a servant leader. A servant leader is someone who puts their followers before them. I think this a helpful mindset to have because it ensures that authority does not get the best of you. To me, a leader of character is someone who puts their followers before them. To think of the people around them as more important then themselves has always been my mindset. I believe that a leader themselves is only one person but their actions have the ability to cause positive and necessary changes in the lives of their followers who are in turn many more than one. A leader who always puts others before them is one of a character because they can achieve the most success and are the most genuine. The most genuine leaders have the best character because they are actually kind and caring which makes people full of love. This is the best character in my opinion.

· Think of someone you admire, a role model. What qualities do you admire about this person(s)?
I admire one of my debate seniors. She is the kindest and most caring person I have ever met. She always puts others' needs before her own no matter how hard it is for her. She genuinely has care for others and whenever she can she always tries to help people in need. The genuine acts make her a great role model because it is instinct and normal for her to do good things. So much so that it is part of her personality. When she does these things and is kind she does not expect anything in return either but does it for the sole purpose of helping others. She is humble and does not boast either despite having multiple commendable achievements. She wins graciously too. This makes her a good person because she is neither over-confident nor arrogant. She always tries to do things that are morally right as well and does not fear to step up and take action when those around her are doing things that are morally incorrect. She does not hesitate to take initiative either and tries her best in everything she does. She is not afraid to make mistakes either and as a result is able to question things and change what is going on if she thinks that it is wrong or could be done better.

· How can you develop these qualities?
I think spending time getting to know her makes me want to become a better person. I think I can develop these qualities to become a better person by reflecting on what I do and taking inspiration from her actions. Use her actions to guide me and with her as a role model I know what I have to do in order to develop certain qualities. For example, in relation to taking more initiative to create change and challenge the status quo I have to try to be braver.

I have always wanted to live in a far away cottage by myself. I want to spend my life running through fields and appreciating nature around me. I would also want to travel to different countries in the world and try and make a difference. For example, I have always wanted to build a school for children in Africa. I think the benefit of having a good education should be given to every child, regardless and it would bring me joy to see the smiles on their faces and see that they have been given equal opportunities as myself. I would also visit america and volunteer in the make a wish foundation as the thought of multiple young children fighting terminal illnesses alone drives me to try and take action. I want to travel to India and try and build shelters and help homeless people because there was once I went there with my family and I saw a homeless mother feeding her children, she offered me some chips and that really changed my perspective of a lot of things. It was a reality check for me and it really made me realise how kind souls like herself have to suffer everyday and yet are so grateful. I want to travel to beaches and countrysides. I want to set-up a horse riding school for kids too because it was my passion when I was younger, in London.

How can we "Let our light Shine" or show "Charity, Patience & Devotion" in a world where being a "Karen" is the norm or even a joke?
- I think we can try to understand their perspective and where they are coming from. We can also try and be more patient with them and show the values that Mrs Yang showed us to them. ALthough it takes time maybe you have to just give some people the benefit of the doubt.

2. One favourite council PM meeting so far and why?
- I really liked the one during council retreat about moral courage because it rly related to me. The one about the doctor who told people about covid. I think it was a very important topic and has been a base for me.

video

1. What is your interpretation of the video? What are some thoughts you might have?

I think that the video signifies leadership because there was that one ant that came in to help the other ants when they were panicking. He helped them to be able to solve their problem and go about their day. Even if the problem may seem incomprehensible to us, for the ants it seemed like a pretty big deal. That one ant was able to guide the other ants and calm them down too.

2. How can you apply this interpretation to your leadership journey?

I think I could especially apply it during placard duty because a lot of the time there can be changes like crowds around a specific area, so even just a few councillors go there and guide the students to another route it could be quite useful to manage the 'traffic jam'.

3. Which ant do you find yourself aspiring to be?

I aspire to be the ant that guided the rest and helped them overcome that obstacle because he not only managed to help them but he calmed them down first, I think that was very important to prevent chaos and other issues.

conclusion:
- ability to overcome obstacles and adversities
- bigger picture
- different perspectives, broaden our viewpoint
- Influence

- set an example for others
- help other leaders along
skills to exercise leadership influence
- engage in conflict: dont back down from a confrontation when necessary
- have a strong voice: share your opinion
- listen with empathy: connect with others not just my own ideas
- show vulnerability: relatable figure, shows mistakes is fine
- be direct: be clear with your words
- don't be defensive

Reflection:
1. Which skill do you find easiest to practice?

I think listening with empathy comes to me the easiest and sometimes vocalising . When I first joined council, I felt as if I needed to be more vocal and I also joined debate to help with that confidence. I used to be really very quiet and I think sometimes in trying to vocalise I need to convince myself of things like 'others will not judge me' or 'it is ok if I have a different opinin' or 'all opinions are valid' things like that to build my confidence to speak. Often, when I speak to people when I do not know them well I tend to ask them questions that will make them talk more about themselves or they're opinions because it is just easier for me to listen. It comes more naturally to me because of the habits I have built.

2. Which skill do you want to practice more intentionally?

I want to more intentionally practice vocalisation. Currently, I do talk enough but sometimes I feel like I need to try to have more control of when I speak and what I say. I need to really think about what I say before I say it and see challenge myself to speak up even if it is a differing view than others.

I also want to be better at confronting situations. A lot of the times, I tend to back down and ask for advice from others on how to hand difficult discipline situations. Recently, there has been one girl who just always looks out for me but is really breaking a lot of school rules and they are very extreme. I can tell teachers and everything but it is difficult for me to confront her with how helpful she has been with me. I think the situations in general are quite rare and very bad so I do not really know how to react. I will seek advice from teachers now and see how to do better.

Humility
- count others as more significant
- not discounting ourselves and others
- false humility:
* humility with the intention to pretend and intention to hurt others

- not possessive of good ideas, concede when others have a better way
- recognise contribution

My reflection:
Personally I have always valued humility but there are certain things that I think I need to rethink before I say. For example, after getting exam results back if I have not scored as high as my expectations but have done fairly well I should be mindful not to say that I have done well to those who did not do as well. I think it is a difficult situation and I think it is very upsetting and makes them feel more defeated and disappointed. I think it is important to be mindful of what I say and really think before I say something because intentions really matter and even if my intention is not to hurt them, I should still be mindful that there still might be the possibility of hurting them. Thus, I think that I should work towards that and work towards being able to accept complements too. For some reason, from very long I am unable to accept complements. Upon reflection, I think i downplay myself and am very self-critical. I think I should learn to graciously accept complements and work towards a more humble yet confident self. I think it is important for me to try and see if I can find a good balance.

'Some people wait for things to happen
Some people make things happen
Some people wonder what happened'

Activity reflection:
1) Why is it important to take initiative?
- In general, I think taking initiative is a possible way to show you care. Sometimes it does not have to be verbal it can be things like offering to help someone or just observing what someone else may be feeling and speaking up about it to them to help them if you can.
- In different aspects of life I think it applies differently.
- For example, at home it is taking the initiative to help my mom when she is overloaded. For me, we have a family of 6 with often social gatherings and relatives who come over. Due to this, my mom is always on the run. Taking initiative in this aspect for me means to take care of my younger brother, not make a mess, help her do chores, take her out for shopping, a walk or lunch.
- At school, it could be when everyone is shy to speak

2) What are some ways in which I can take more initiative?

Points Ms Cao brought up:
- Initiative - 'I' -> make your surroundings/place you are in. What more can I do to help those around me?
- Help without being asked to (sometimes)
- thoughtfulness -> another form of taking initiative
- e: everyone
- the measure of a leader is if you are not there, will things still get done? (inspiring others to do the same -> beyond just yourself)
- it takes time to spread the culture of care and initiative
- not just as a student leader -> what's the purpose
- being others-centred, spirit of helping others

It is not about the authority for me but instead it is about making sure that you can help and brighten up someones day, because you never know whats going on with them at that time.

Inspire a shared vision:

1.

I think every time council retreat comes around I set a new goal for myself. I remember in sec 2 the first one I aimed to make friends, which was okay for a new councillor but then as I progressed my goal for the end of year retreat was to find myself as a leader and become more empathetic. This time was different though because I was a part of EXCO. My goals no longer centred around myself I was more focused on building relationships between those in my comm and really learning to take on this role of EXCO. It was a really big event to plan and I felt at times, I wished I stopped to think more- what is the meaning of this task? What’s the meaning of this segment? What do I want to convey to council? This is something I hope to work on, not getting so caught up in the flow of things and stopping to realise the importance.

There were many mishaps along the way but I think we were bound to make some. I do think we could’ve communicated better and we needed to be more confident in our abilities to lead.

Why was Mirabel troubled?

Do you think that leaders need special talents or abilities to serve? Why or why not?

1) I think Mirabel was troubled as she did not have a 'gift'. She had a very big family and from young to old everyone had a gift, they all had something special and unique to serve those around them eg 'healing food magic'. However, Mirabel was the only one without a gift and was reminded of this whenever she looked around and when the kids asked her about her gift. Mirabel may have felt out of place or not special. She really wanted to have that gift and she thought it was important to make her unique and amazing.

2)No, I think leadership does not have anything to do with talents but cultivating skills and values. I believe that attitude towards learning and openness would be what cultivates skills. Talents and something special does help to serve but there are many small or big things one can do to make a difference without it. Sometimes a physical difference or change is not even necessary it could me emotional/mental too.

triange game @tiktok

share on padlet 1-2 photos that have changed you as a person

how have u grown as a person/leader this year?

- I think I learnt to become more resilient. I was challenged when I had to tackle many things in one go and it was often overwhelming and super stressful. However, every time I overcame a challenge, when I was facing the next one I always told myself 'If you did it then you can do it now'. It was a big mindset change for me and pushed me to face my burnout and keep going regardless. I grew as a leader when I found my voice this year. Usually, I am not so good at using my voice to lead but this year as an EXCO member it challenged me to speak up and try to guide others more confidentelly.

legacy: think of others
