The novel “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte sets up chapters 1-10 to unravel Jane Eyre. We are introduced to a girl who is a orphan who lives with a neglectful family. The identity of this cruel family is soon revealed, they turn out to be Jane Eyre’s own family her (Aunt) Mrs. Reed who not only is emotionally abusive but also allows Jane to get physically abused by her son. Events displayed in the first few chapters set us up to unravel her character more specifically the what/ why of Jane Eyre. For it being her family they do not act like it which can take a great emotional toll on someone who is so young. Throughout ch 1-10 Jane soon gets sent to a boarding school by her aunt where we learn more about her personality, emotion’s, and her friendships.

“I am not deceitful: if I were, I should say I loved you; but I declare I do not love you: I dislike you the worst of any body in the world except John Reed;” ( Bronte Ch 5 pg 51). This quote is a breaking point of Jane and the start to her new journey. Jane received lots of courage and individuality getting sent away. She became free from what was holding her back which was Mrs Reed. We see after Jane being sent to the school she creates a meaningful friendship with the character named Helen. Jane and Helen’s friendship into a beautiful relationship between two young girls. This shows how Jane is now able to feel love and create emotional connections which we would never imagine from where she comes from. The message of these chapters is to show us how Jane can grow.

In recent chapters 20-26 Janes character development is highly exemplified in these few chapters. We are shown a new element of Jane where she can be very impulsive. This starts to show after Jane comes back from visiting with her aunt and her funeral which may cause Jane to be in a very vulnerable state. When Jane comes back she first meets with Rochester they are both pleased to see each other. Which Jane would have not suspected before meeting with him. At the end of their conversation Jane says something to Rochester that may inflect with their relationship in the future.“ I am strangely glad to get back again to you; and where ever you are is my home - my only home.” Jane makes this bold comment to Rochester which reveals how she is feeling now about him. She has found comfort in him where he feels like she belongs there with him at all times. As we have been reading we see Jane as never had a home to her own so it makes sense she is finding her own comfort “home” in a person now .

In chapter 25 of Jane Eyre Jane begins to have horrible dreams. One of them being Jane seeing a figure coming towards her she describes the figure as evil looking, with blood shot eyes, and looking almost like a vampire. “ Of the foul German specter - the Vampyre.” (Pg 275). This dream can be symbolic of Janes new awakened feelings of Rochester new marrige and how defeated she is feeling at this moment. The color red is utilized in this dream and can be symbolic of Jane being in danger. She also dreams of her holding a child while Thornfield is under danger Rochester is out of reach. This dream can foreshadow a view of how Janes and Rochester relationship can end up like in the future.
