Trench's foot seemed like a common disease during the war. The trench cycle was something I never heard of before.
Were there wars also during the nighttime?

The bodies took up a lot of space and the stench was unbearable to someone not used to it. By flanking the enemy army to attack from two sides, you have an advantage in battle. Having different trench and battle lines in a war is good to protect the important units and are used for retreating to safety.

If there were only a few hundred soldiers left in battle and someone fell asleep or ran away while on the job, would they still shoot their own soldiers? How much actual free-time did the soldiers have?

Trench warfare is like bungee jumping, although scary and unpleasant at first, it is an interesting thought in the future that has changed many lives whether for better or for worse.
