As part of this assignment, you need to select two assessment resources to share and explain...one for the Stand Alone approach and one for the Holistic or Integrated approach. This has come up as a discussion point in the collaborate sessions so we are going to explore this a little further which may help you to integrate this aspect within your post in this week's task and also in the assignment.

 

We have talked in recent weeks about Assessment for learning, of learning and as learning and Fellowes and Oakley (2014) explore this further.

"Assessment for learning is formative assessment that happens during learning, and feedback is given to children in ways that are meaningful to them in order to help them progress. Assessment of learning is the kind of assessment that takes place to ascertain the degree to which a child has attained a learning goal. Assessment as learning can and should also be used—this is when children think about, and comment on, their own learning and begin to take some responsibility for it" (Fellowes and Oakley, 2014, p157).

This video provides some further examples of the different forms of assessment that are used within the classroom. Whilst not specifically Literacy, it does explore the three forms that have been mentioned. 

 

Further on Formative Assessment

This form of assessment can sometimes be the least well understood so we are going to explore this a little further. This video provides some more ideas on ways to use formative assessment within the classroom and although some aspects are related to Numeracy, they could easily be used in the Literacy environment. 

 

We understand that everyone is busy juggling family, work and social life with your study.  Here are a few tips and resources to help you succeed in your study this TP.

Spend time checking that you have time to complete the number of units you are planning each TP. Each undergraduate unit recommends 10-12.5 hours per week, and placements require more than this.  Studying 4 units at once is the equivalent of a full time job!

Check all of your assignment dates at the beginning of the TP. Often assignments are due on the same day. There are some great tips on time management on the student portal.  The study planners (Links to an external site.) , especially the interactive one, are great ways to get organised. You will also find information on positive study habits (Links to an external site.) including workshops, time management and motivation tips. 

Reassess your study load once you have checked assignments and filled in your study planner.  Sometimes it is better to do one less unit per TP, rather than putting yourself under extra stress and the possibility of not completing the unit.  

Start working on your assignments early – at least 2 weeks before the due date and aim to be up to the polishing stage by the weekend before the due date.  Make sure you plan in a buffer for those unexpected events that tend to crop up the weekend before the due dates. 

It is an expectation throughout your degree that you will submit your assignments by the due date.

Timely assignment submission not only helps with your course progression, it helps with developing time management and work ethic skills needed for your teaching profession.   In addition to teaching their class, teachers have a multitude of tasks to get through each day. In any week they have units and lessons to write, student work to mark, reports to write, parent emails to respond to, meetings to attend, playground duty to name just a few priorities.  In fact Time Management for Teachers (Links to an external site.) reports that the average classroom teacher will make more than 1500 decisions every school day!

If you are unsure how to interpret the assignment or where to start contact your eLA.  They are your one stop shop for all content and assignment related questions. You will also find an assignment discussion board to ask questions and read what others have asked, and assignment collaborates. 

Student Coaches (Links to an external site.) can help you organise your study schedule and give you some great tips. If you are anxious that you will not complete your assignments on time contact the coaches for some expert help.

If it important to take time out for yourself while studying, as this keeps you fresh and alert.  There are some great self-care strategies and other student services and wellbeing resources (Links to an external site.) available on the student portal.

Short extensions.  We do understand that at times unexpected events get in the way of your good intentions.  If you are unable to submit on the due date email your eLA for a 48 hour extension.

Longer extensions are not normally given, except in cases where your studies are adversely affected by acute illness, misadventure or other extraordinary cause or circumstance reasonably beyond your control.  Evidence such as medical certificates are normally required, although we are aware that there are sensitive times where you may be unable to supply evidence.

Most long extensions are no more than 7 days as we find anything longer than that impacts on students’ ability to successfully complete the unit.

Please note that planned holidays and being on placement are not valid reasons for an extension. The form for longer extension (Links to an external site.) is on the student portal.
