The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or the hydrological cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. The mass of water on Earth remains fairly constant over time but the partitioning of the water into the major reservoirs of ice, fresh water, saline water and atmospheric water is variable depending on a wide range of climatic variables. The water moves from one reservoir to another, such as from river to ocean, or from the ocean to the atmosphere, by the physical processes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, surface runoff, and subsurface flow. In doing so, the water goes through different forms: liquid, solid (ice) and vapor.

The Emergent layer- The emergent layer consists of the tallest trees in the rainforest which can reach up to 200 feet. With trunks that measure up to 16 feet around. There is a lot of sunlight reaching these trees. Animals found in this layer are eagles, monkeys, bats and butterflies.

Canopy layer- This is the primary layer of the forest and forms a roof over the two remaining layers. This layer is a maze of leaves and branches. Many animals are living and found in this layer because of abundant food. Animals found here are snakes, toucans and treefrogs.

Understory Layer- The plants in this layer have to grow larger leaves to reach the sunlight. The plants in this area rarely grow till 12 feet. Many animals live here including jaguars, red eyed tree frogs and leopards. There are many insects in this layer.

Forest floor- It’s very dark in this area. Almost no plants grow in this layer. Things decay quickly here due to the lack of sunlight. A leaf that might take 1 year to decompose in a regular climate will take 6 weeks. Giant anteaters love in this area.
