The title of “colonel” is given to someone who upholds the code of honor in the south. When someone is known as a colonel in the south, they are very respected by society in the south, and puts them in a higher position in the social hierarchy. Their higher position gives them more confidence and courage when confronting or standing up to others.

Colonel Sherburn uses violence and murder for for such a simple concept which is to make the crowd realize that they're using these methods when they know that no harm will come to them. Huck does not even stay after his speech on human cowardice is over to argue about the idea further, because of his inability to fit in with the white society which easily uses these techniques as Colonel Sherburn does. Since Jim is a slave, he obviously can not stand up to others as Colonel Sheburn does.

Huck and Jim are unable to stand up to others like the colonels because they lack the same status. Huck is still a teenager and lacks the seniority that the colonels have and Jim is a runaway slave; the lowest position in southern society.

Colonel Sherburn and Colonel Grangerford are both upper class white men living in a society that allows them to hold the fake title of Colonel. (Compared to Huck who is only a child, and Jim who is a slave for most of the novel).
They both understand where they stand in society, which allows them to "control" those around them. For example Colonel Sherburn was able to disperse the mob of angry townspeople, without actually killing any of them. (Although he did kill a drunk man, as well as threaten the mob with a gun). Colonel Grangerford was able to gain respect and support from his family in order to fight in his the feud.

The title of 'colonel' indicates that Sherburn and Grangerford are both meant to be symbols of honorable southern men by the standards of the honor code of the time. With that title comes a reputation that must be upheld. These two men prioritize confrontation if it means protecting their honor because it is expected of them. Bravery, to them, is protecting their reputation.

Colonel Sherburn and Colonel Grangerford gain more power because of the way they are regarded in society. The power that is present makes it easier for them to be "brave". Comparing their status in society with Huck and Jim, it is harder for Huck and Jim to be brave because of societal views towards them. On the raft, both Huck and Jim know that the Southern society is after them and is trying to find Jim. Living under the constant hurry to escape, they face more challenges because of the way they are regarded in society. For Huck, a lot of the times he is battling with his conscience about whether he is doing the right thing by helping to free Jim, and this thin firmity on his decisions makes it harder for him to be confident and brave.

Colonel Sherburn talks on a isolated platform which distinguishes himself from the mob. The mob is immediately valued less as they are a collective force versus one gentleman with a code of honor. He lectures them as a father scolds his children. Therefore, less value is given to the people and depicts Colonel Sherburn as a brave man.

In Huck’s position, he finds it difficult to follow the code of honor because of moral issues. He does not believe in the violence and recklessness that are listed in the code of honor. In Thomas Page’s list of rules, he wrote, “it placed honor above even life” where he is talking about how violence is necessary for the code of honor. You must be willing to give up your life in order to sustain your honor. Huck looks at this concept literally and finds it to be very stupid. Thus, Huck lacks the morality and therefore he would not have the title to give them the confidence to stand up to others as compared to Colonel Sherburn and Colonel Grangerford.

Colonel Grangerford is someone who attends a church in which the minister talks about brotherly love while he is with the family he is involved in a feud with. He has the patience to be able to handle such a situation, which is a trait that Jim and Huck lack because of the way they grow up and are treated. This problem can be again seen in that Huck and Jim do not have the patience to deal with the way society wants them to behave based on their race, which is why they try to escape to free territory to be able to freely follow their beliefs.
