The main thing for our team was balancing our language arts block. We did not want the increased focus on writing to impact our guided reading and reading mini lessons. As we have frequently checked in, we are not feeling successful with that. Therefore, our main thing is to find a solution to help keep the main thing of balancing our block successful. As a leader, I can help initiate check ins, conversations, problems, solutions, and support from the literacy team to help brainstorm solutions and tweaks we can make to ensure we are balancing reading and writing effectively. I also seek mentor books beyond the pacing guide that with the help of Leslie I can share with the team to help balance our reading and writing focuses interchangeably when possible.

Moving forward with the rest of the school year we would like to continue our set Language Arts block, with a consistent writing block. To prepare for our Language Arts block, we would like our main thing for the second half of the school year to be creating a detailed plan/pace of the units being taught. In order to effectively do this and support my team, I will need to initiate the conversations of what each class needs for focus lessons, allow time for communicating strategies that work well for others, encourage the sharing of resources, and reach out for support from the literacy team when needed.

Our team's main thing this year is to proactively map out our curriculum for each subject so we are ready and well prepared when beginning a unit. While pacing out units, we want to share our ideas of how we teach certain topics, and write this in a table to keep for next year. After each unit, our plan is to go back to these charts and document what went well and what did not work. We will use this information next year to adjust our teaching. As a leader, I can ask questions to prompt reflections and discussions, make sure the pacing charts we are creating are in One Note and easily accessible, and stay on top of adding the pacing of upcoming units to our CLT meeting agendas.

Our team’s main thing is to continue planning using our framework, paying special attention to the new Language Arts curriculum. As the team leader, my role will be to guide the conversation (and keep it on track). When different opinions are given, I will try to synthesize and find common ground so that everyone’s voice is heard and we come to a common understanding.

We had two main things this year. The first had been to use Interactive Writing to support the literacy learning of our students, to scaffold what is known to build on what is somewhat known or unknown. Our other had been to plan and implement Math Workshop in a true workshop model. We decided to focus on the Math workshop model for the rest of the year. As team lead, I will be looking ahead at units to work with the team to plan. I feel like I know my own strengths well, along with that of my team. I want to use all of our strengths and experiences teaching Math to bring this shared knowledge together in creating these units. I will make sure to continue to make it a Main Thing by scheduling it into our CLTs.

Our main thing was to help teachers successfully unpack the new LA PPG in order to plan lessons that would increase the amount/level of writing across the building. Our goal was (and still is) to front load information for teams so that they can walk away from each PD session with the knowledge and resources (mentor texts!) they need to dive into each unit. As leaders, we know our work is not finished. We look forward to helping teams find a better balance between reading and writing. We also understand that writing is just one aspect of balanced literacy and we are excited to look at the bigger picture within our building.

Our main thing this year was to balance writing and reading instruction within our language arts block. Individually, and as a team, we feel the time crunch to fit it all in.
Making instruction meaningful to the students to maximize participation and learning, while balancing mandated curriculum and testing.
Although these were/are our priorities as a grade level we have found ourselves putting time in effort into finding ways to cope with 5th grades busy specials schedule and the amount of instructional time testing takes. We also discovered that our students have needed more than the typical amount of emotional and social support this school year.
