The apple pay sound for me in particular sparked the whole issue around social media based consumerism and how social media giants such as Instagram, TikTok etc essentially scam/tricking young people out of cash for absolutely useless products. This kills the initial idea of what the apps were intended for being creativity and instead secretly preying on the younger audience targeting them as they are the most venerable and most willing to buy into anything especially if its advertised by their favourite influencer.

Another issue that has come alight with the initial issue is the fact that instagram has now added a shopping tab making it much easier to buy from the app. I defiantly feel this is not needed but this is a very two sided argument. This was addressed by many people online as not being needed and a obvious way that reveals the true consumerism intentions of the social media giant. Looking at this is unfortunate but now instagram has basically taken its creativity away and turned the app into a social shop app like Depop when in turns it doesn't need to be. It also has info about you so can edit the shop to things you like, which is even worse.

When researching if a solution has come to tackling consumerism on social media, not many if actually no results come up as battling these huge corporations into perhaps removing the shop edit on instagram is a no go for them. To the big corporations it would be a huge loss for them as they have put a huge amount of money into the shopping edit. But looking at instagram who are owned by facebook, they already have a successful businesses on Facebook marketplace so they could remove all ads on instagram and perhaps make a whole new app dedicated to selling, something similar to Depop but a more influencer focused edition. This would make the situation a bit better as then young people can go on instagram purely for enjoyment and socially interacting and leave the selling to this new app.

Ive been thinking about the last post a-lot and i think a better solution to this situation that can be applied even to the likes of TikTok is a more edited and healthier feed to instagram. Obviously it's too hard to convince a huge company to remove paid content so perhaps they cold scrap the shopping feature, but keep influencer paid advertisements. The advertisements would need to stick to new guidelines made by their partner company Facebook. So for example they are only allowed to advertise products that are either beneficial or educational. So no weird advertisements of useless products or of these 'fake pills' that are sometimes advertised that convince people that it can make them loose weight or look better. As everyone using the app is great as they are and don't need any negativity as life is hard enough anyway, so positive products would be great to advertise to the instagram consumers/audience. This should hopefully bring back the initial creativity and fun concept once again to the app. This will declutter the app a-lot as well.
