Consumerism by Ymasumac Maranon

Consider the following quote: "the fruit of a dynamic coherence between the material and spiritual requirements of life, will recede further and further out of reach as long as consumerism continues to act as opium to the human soul." What does this mean for adolescents in light of this chapter and your discussions today? How can we support youth in retaining all of their faculties of self?

I feel like adolescents nowadays, they look at good looking models as a source what they want to be someday. From shows like American Next Top Model, teenage girls want to use that source as a way to ask their parents for make up. While there are some positive consumerism like help build economy growth and such, the negative aspects can create giant debts. Consumerism forces people to work harder and spend more money than they earn. There also negative aspect of the world too. Our natural resources in the world are depleting. We have find new ways to innovate ourselves. Instead of using loose leaf paper to present ourselves, we use technology like Padlet here to express our opinions

Consumerism is certainly devastating to those who cannot control the impulses to spend and who are gratified by objects, but our economy also relies on consumerism. I can't help but wonder how many jobs would be sacrificed without the prevalence of "consumerism" in our society.

I love to read. I also love books. I almost always have a huge to-be-read pile of books. I often find this distracting and it is hard to concentrate on reading just one book, knowing I have all the others I want to read, as well. Sometimes it helps to hide some of the books out of sight and then I find it easier to concentrate on one book. This is consumerism for me. The urge to have more is distracting me from the ability to enjoy what I have already. As a teacher, I need to be encouraging my students to focus on what is in front of them: what they already have and the good things that already exist in their lives and not for them to be focused on what they might have or might want in the future.

I definitely think that our consumer-based society breeds materialism over the spiritual requirements of life and creates this gap between what is necessary and needed versus what you want or what you crave. You NEED social and spiritual connections and friendships, but you do not NEED an expensive purse. But unfortunately, consumerism pushes this narrative which blurs the line between want and need and can make those who cannot afford things that are materialistic seem somehow lesser than those around them, and definitely affect their self-esteem. I think this is especially important when it comes to the implication this has on adolescent development as they are more likely to internalize these narratives and developed mental health problems because of it. In terms of supporting youth, and retaining their faculties of self, I think especially as teachers we must act with guidance and offer resources for mental health and not compare students to each other and compare "successes" and "failures".

I feel that adolescents have a lot to view in terms of media. Their actions can and lives are probably more deeply rooted in consumerism than any other generation before it. Having conversations about how the media portrays societal ideals is important.

After reading this quote it seems that allowing teenagers to indulge themselves in purchasing/consuming material goods as a way to obtain happiness will only result in failure. From both reading the chapter and our discussions today we, as future teachers, need to help our students find healthy outlets within social interactions. By doing this they can better understand themselves and others around them. If teenagers can understand the difference between want and need they can prioritize what is important for them in life.

Adolescents are looking to find themselves and they want to be accepted by a certain group or groups. My sister and I desperately wanted to shop at hot topic when we were in Jr high and begged my mom to buy us $20 band tees just because we wanted the emo group from our schools to socially acceptable us. If you wear the same clothes as a group or buy the same brands or merchandise, then they’ll see you’re not a “poser” or a fake as some adolescents would label each other as. You have to “look the part” in order to be accepted into the specific group.
The way I could help my future students is to remind them and let them know that someone who truly wants to get to know you or be your friend will not reject you if you do not own a certain type of clothing or electronic material.

Marketing has a way of controlling the way adolescents behave, as well as influencing their identities to change the way they socialize with one another overall. Additionally, consumerism has a way of effecting one's mental health because a young mind is easily swayed through what they see throughout media. Trying to fit in, follow the latest trends, going for a certain image that is edited and visualizing a false sense of "beauty". This type of stress puts a lot of anxiety on teens and this can lead to low self-esteem and a pressure to fit into a world that isn't so "real" anymore.

Consumerism begins at such an early age now with all of the television commercials and advertisements on YouTube and other gaming platforms. It teaches kids at a young age that you need material items to be happy when in fact you do not.

I believe that there is a very fine line between addiction and obsession. Having an obsession does not take over other facets of ones life. I have come to understand that addiction is something that is compulsory and nasty. It takes over lives and consumes them until they are just a shell of their past self. Adolescents tend to have addictive personalities, and the American standard of consumerism does not help. Consumerism manufactures false senses of self within adolescents and makes them lose their true self. They start to feel good when they buy something and it becomes addicting.

Many young people nowadays feel the need to "keep up with the times" and this involves owning the most trendy fashion, latest electronics and listening to the music of specific artists & purchasing the products that these artists endorse. This can prove to be detrimental to some youth because in a way it clouds their individuality and also makes them obsess over always being up to date with the world. We can encourage youth to value more personal and meaningful items/activities over those that media, peers, or celebrities place great value into. It is essential that we emphasize the difference between a need and a desire and how to prioritize one over another.
