Procedure

1. Participant was selected by convenience sampling from a wider population of 16-18 year old high school students 
2. Ethical considerations were read out to participant 
3. Consent form was given to participant to read, sign and return 
4. Prepared experiment instructions were read out to participant
5. Dependant on differing experimental groups, participant was given either Sheet A or Sheet B
6. Participants were given 60 seconds to memorise the given words, either through elaborative rehearsal (Sheet A) or out loud maintenance rehearsal (Sheet B)
7. After 60 seconds the sheets were taken away from participants 
8. Participants were handed a blank sheet of paper and a pen
9. Participants were given 60 seconds to retrieve and record as many of the given 15 words as possible through free recall 
10. Recall sheets were collected by the experimenter after the recall period
11. Participants were debriefed: informed of the nature of the study and checked for psychological harm
12. Participants were let go from the experiment 
13. Results from participants were collated, recorded and analysed - the average percentage of recall for each experimental group was calculated
