Nice job here with your STEP 3 work. I wonder if you all should focus on "why there is a lack of mental health awareness in the AA community?" That may give you a better direction going forward. That why you can focus on some of the reasons you included here: racism; lack of education; poverty etc. This will help focus your focus on the causes of lack of mental health awareness and not worry about the effects which are also listed above. Let me know what you think about this.

Interdisciplinary to me is adding different knowledge's together to help create solutions to a problem. With 'mental health and the black community' it is actually a broad complex problem that possess so many different layers. We can take the discipline of counseling and draw upon a few reason why Black people have a harder time coming to terms by having a mental illness, and also the difficulty of someone who looks like them (and thus more likely to understand them) to treat them (us). We can also add the discipline of research. Research is rarely done on Black people and this sadly adds to the stigma of mental health is a "white thing". But in the past 10 years more Black people have come out and willing to share their accounts of dealing with mental health. This in return proves that research is needed and that the few research studies we do have are accurate and can be used to possibly come up with solutions.

What I have learned about interdisciplinary was that despite me focusing on a specific issue; even specific issues involve multiple disciplines. Yes, the internet sources that I choose focused on the church and the Black communities relationship with mental health but, they had the multiple disciplines drawn from. There was history, psychology and religion being the main ones. The reason we should look to each of these disciplines to really understand the problem. Especially since religion is a main and biggest reason Black people do not choose to get treatment. This was stated in one of my sources backing what I said the first day of class.

This week I actually read the sources I choose. I choose these sources because I believed choosing a specific issue especially being one that is a big reason why Black people choose not to get treated for mental illnesses. This week I watched the Counseling Play posit video and I like how he spoke about being able to understand people from different ethnic groups. This was great to hear because that is also an issue. People feel more comfortable about talking to someone that looks like them.

After reading the articles and listening to the podcast it was nice to see that a shift has been made. More Black people are choosing to get treated and more pastors are seeing the reasons why some wont and what they can do to change it. Seeing history being used in as a discipline and a discipline used a lot because how can you fix problems without looking into the past. I think tackling the Black mental health issue using interdisciplinary studies is a great way to view the problem. You take insights from history and add psychology and sociology to get an understanding about the issue and then to find ways that it can be fixed.

After this I realize that there are a lot of biases when you are an expert in one field. This is not a stab at them but often times when you are an expert in one field sometimes it hinders you. But taking from other disciplines because this prevents biases and the ability to create solutions from pulling from all disciplines that can help. After this step I am more on board with interdisciplinary because I feel this will help me draw from other disciplines to create solutions for those that need it.
