My placement on a surgical ward

I realised that other than during the surgery, surgeons very rarely interact with patients pre-op & post-op and that in the surgical ward, nurses spend the most time with patients. I was given the opportunity to be involved in both the pre-operative & the post-operative care and monitoring of patients.

It was better than I had anticipated as I was able to effectively connect the theoretical knowledge I had gained with practical application.

I really enjoyed my placement.

My mentor was very patient with me and explained things thoroughly.

I used a lot of skills that we mentioned in our practice lectures. I especially enjoyed preparing iv medication, mixing iv antibiotics and administering them.

It was not as stressful as I thought it was going to be, the patients and cases I saw and helped in was interesting but my drawback were the staff. They weren’t as friendly and they talked badly a lot behind each other’s backs.

Mentor was very nice and was insightful about experiences that she has gone through. As a placement however it was not as hand’s on as i taught it would be, but a very observational placement. Throughout the placement most of the other nurses and doctors were nice and tired to teach us as much as they could.

It was a very good placement I was in the renal unit where I had the opportunity to do lots of hands on care. I also had the opportunity to see 3 operations an insertion of a PD line a hernia and an operation because of dislocation of the PD line. I also had the opportunity to go to house visits to see the patients do dialysis at home to assist them and guid them if they are doing something wrong.

I practiced alot of pre and post-op care for surgical patients varying in age. A lot of moving and handling using different devices and communication with doctors and physiotherapists. Learned about different fractures and saw how a total knee replacement is done. I practiced change of dressings and managment of surgical wounds.

My placement period gave me a great experience & exposure.i could study more than I expected.i worked in a team gained knowledge about pre&post operative surgical care,how to deal with patients.i could apply my theoretical knowledge to enhance my practical skills.

It was a good overall placement, mentor was very supportive and encouraging. During my placement I used screening tools (RUDAS/MOCA) to assess the cognitive impairment of a patient + their relatives. Referring to the ABCDE approach during assessment in the client's home, parameter taking, documentation, and adapting the client's care plan to their needs + offering services to improve their overall quality of care.

It was a very interesting placement as we got to see different skills being performed in the clinic like local surguries and different types of wounds. i also got to see the progession and some deterioration of wounds as patients were coming in frequently for change of dressings

I enjoyed and learnt alot of different things. The teamwork and passion for their career is what mostly effected and opened my eyes as they work fir the patients not for the money. I went to placement as if im going out with my friends as they truly welcomed me as a new friend of theirs and on the whole , i learnt in a fun way.

While I was on placement, I was able to practice what I learned such as ,aseptic techniques , learned some basic pharmacology and also saw ECG's, bladder scan and suctioning being done . I also realised that I am doing the right course ,because I loved going on placement and I do not imagen working anything else beside nursing . It was amazing seeing patients getting better and leaving to go back home .

I had a lovely time at placement most of the time the staff where very nice and accepted the students and made sure to help us when we needed it , I gained a lot of skills ...... I also learned that many elderly people just come in to get there feet washed because they have become very lazy .

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

I had the opportunity to go in the theatre for kidney transplant where I observed lots of clinical skills like intubation, urinary catheter, and creating a central line in the jugular vein to insert the vas-Cath. Moreover, I saw how they create an incision and how the surgeon carefully expose the patient iliac fossa (lower abdomen) and then how they join the kidney transplant and sutures everything together

I learned alot about Chronic kidney disease and about different types of dialysis and different skills such as giving injections etc. And I learnt about transplantation and how difficult it is to get a transplant. But I was scared to ask to go see a transplant. I saw necrosis in the toes.

It was a really nice experience for me and I learned a lot regarding the kidneys and its sub function, disease and even the types of dialysis. I have practiced the procedures like fluid change and PD exchanges several times . Im really grateful to have such a supportive mentor who let me to do some subcutaneous and intramuscular injections .

During my placement on MAU 2 I have developed some clinical skills I have increased my practical knowledge. I have done administration of medicines, removal of cannula I have also administered subcutaneous injection, moving and handling of patients, taking vital signs and also some basic procedures such as bed bathing, feeding etc overall it was a great experience and I also had a supportive mentor.

I had a great experience during my placement days because it taught me the value of converting the theoretical knowledge to practical and the value of good communication .I have done many clinical procedures like removal of cannula and catheter, administering medications , moving and handling, wound dressing and taking vital signs. Moreover, I got a very supportive mentor who became my strength at my lowest moment.

I was got really a nice experience in orthogeriatric ward and most of time I am not with my mentor . I got the opportunity to work with different staff members in the ward and I got a different experience by interacting with all . I am really going to miss the opportunity I get to work there and during my placement days I got the opportunity to check the parameters , document charting , taking care of my patients.
