Mrs. Shelby is confused by the invitee for dinner that evening in their home. Mrs. Shelby has developed a softer than normal relationship with some of the slaves that are owned by her and Mr. Shelby. It is because of this that she is suspicious to begin with in regards to Haley. She greatly values Eliza and her feelings, as the initial reason that Mrs. Shelby asks her husband about Mr. Haley is because Eliza was very visibly upset at the possibility of her or her boys being traded or sold away. Stowe begins to show the softer more humane side possessed by a small percentage of slave owners back then.

I chose this image to portray the beginning of this scene as it precisely depicts the mood and tone of Mrs. Shelby in the beginning of chapter five. She can sense that something is not right, and vies to not be apart of the tearing apart of families so often seen during the times of slavery.

Mr. Shelby shows a bit of embarrassment along with nerves when his wife asks him about Mr. Haley. He is uncomfortable because his wife does not know about the financial bind that he has placed himself in, specifically the mortgage he owes. He is also nervous about his business dealings because he remembers his promise to Tom to set him free eventually. Mrs. Shelby highlights the fact that they have gone over Tom's freedom with him hundreds of times. With Tom being traded away, that reality becomes much more unlikely, as many other slave owners are not as nice as the Shelby's are to their slaves, and certainly would not promise them freedom.

I chose this gif to represent the discomfort and nerves that Stowe portrays Mr. Shelby having, it is never an easy task disclosing information that one knows would upset the person asking, especially if the inquiring individual is a loved one.

Mr. Shelby then tells Mrs. Shelby what his particular business dealings with Haley are about, much to her dismay. Mrs. Shelby is equally surprised and hurt as she promised Eliza that nothing would happen to Harry just as Mr. Shelby promised Tom that he would be set free. She cannot believe that their beloved Tom; whom she calls faithful, good, noble hearted, and many other good things, is going to be traded away. She loves Tom and feels directly responsible for his upbringing and the man who he is today.

I chose this image to represent this part of the scene as it accurately shows the shock that Mrs. Shelby feels when she learns her beloved Tom is set to be traded.

Mr. and Mrs. Shelby argue over Mr. Shelby's business decision. Mrs. Shelby is mortified at the fact that they are trading away Tom and Harry as she deeply cares for Eliza and Tom herself. While Mr. Shelby is also somewhat conflicted about this decision he made, he takes a practical outlook and sees it as the only move possible to eradicate his debt to others. The ensuing argument highlights one of the main horrors of slavery, the splitting up of families. Mrs. Shelby tries everything in her power to cut the deal before it has been finished, but Mr. Shelby then apologizes once more and says he cannot do anything now as the papers have already been signed.

The gif used to retell this element of the story fits as the Shelby's have different outlooks on slavery as a whole, and as a result are arguing about Mr. Shelby's decision.

Eliza is sitting in the closet adjacent to the room in which Mr. and Mrs. Shelby are speaking in, and she can overhear it all. Naturally, as a mother, she desires to protect her children, especially because she lost her two other children before Harry. She clings onto Harry especially tight because of this, and took comfort in Mrs. Shelby's promise to her that Harry would remain fine no matter what. She finds a small bit of comfort in the fact that Mrs. Shelby is attempting to reverse the course of the trade, however she is still immensely scared.

I chose this image to represent Eliza because it invokes a scared and in the dark mood, which is exactly what Eliza is when she overhears the discussion between her masters.
