The mix tape is a sign of the giver’s affection for the recipient, and it celebrates a deep friendship. If someone goes to the trouble to compile a group of particular songs together in a particular order, this action usually signifies that the maker of the mix tape cares a lot about the taste of the person who is going to receive it. An example of this is when Charlie gives Patrick a mix tape.

During the novel Melinda gets a tree for a art project it is also represented like Melindas growth through the novel trying to rebrand her identity. This example starts from page 12 on to the rest of the book.

When the characters pass through the tunnel it marks a specific moment in their adolesence. For example, when something big happens to Charlie or he learns something new the author usually take the story to the tunnels and Charlie feels epic or "Infinte". At the end of Part 1, Charlie was just at the party and he got drunk for the first time. He also felt appreciated and loved after a long time of feeling alone and depressed. We fing the characters going through the tunnel and it marks a big step on Charlie's path in adolesence. (Pgs. 37,38,39)

Melinda hides in the school supply closet constantly. I think that this could symbolize how she wants to run away from the world. A good example of this would be "My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one can hear me(Anderson,32)"

They also do it because maybe they are having a rough time and they don't want to think about those things for a while. Charlie also ended up addicted to smoking because his friends were not hanging out with him due to the fact that he kissed sam.

The whole section is just symbolism in English class with Hairwoman. "A wall with glass embedded in it" (Anderson 100). Hairwoman then explains how glass is used in prisons. Therefore it tells the reader that the house with walls that have glass is a symbol for a hurtful or dangerous place. Or that the house is a prison.
