Look at these four sources. What do they tell us about the London slums in the 19th C? Comment on what you see and provenance - remember the 9 source questions (Check on MBC if you don't remember them!) How do these tie in with the cartoon and the quotes from Dickens in how we understand the East End in the 19th C?

the cartoon (source 4) is different to actual pictures because in the cartoon they are inside and are very wearing hats which shows that they are of more importance.

Source 1-The place is very crowded not just from people but from all the rubbish like the example in source 1- covered in pillows and blankets and rubbish. This source is realiabe because this picture was actually taken in 1920 in Dorset street, Whitechapel.

Source2- the children have dirty feet and dirt all over them, because of there dirty feet this suggests that they can't afford just buy shoes and the older child looks very weak while also having to care for the baby- there is no mother there and the children are probably starving yo deaths which is what this suggests, this isn't as reliable because

Source 3-this shows all the sick and the homeless all lying on the street whilst people are caring for them and that in 1890 there weren't as many people as in 1920( source 1) where there are very cramped

London slums were filled with people living on the streets and some with no parents. People wouldn't of had very good jobs if they were living on the streets. The time of Jack the Ripper would've been very dangerous for these people not having any security. A common job would've been prostitution as people wouldn't of had much choice for jobs. Source 1 shows people very cramped together with very little space, source 2 shows a young girl holding a baby - this might mean they've lost their parents or that their parents died which most likely hapened a lot during this time period and left a lot of children as orphans. Source 3 shows a lot of smog and bad air, which we now know is a bug killer and was very dangerous. People then might not of know this very well and they couldn't see smog if it was closer than arm length away. Source 4 is a bunch of men stood around, possibly looking for women which was a common crime in the 18th/19th century. These pictures would've been taken as proof of how much London has changed from then to know and shows how badly people were roughing it.

It also shows that people that lived there were poor and the streets were really dirty and that it was not a nice place to live. In the first source it shows us how poor people were because they had to live on the streets. The second source shows us that kids would have to look after younger siblings because their parents either left them or are dead. Source C shows people living on the streets and how dirty it was. Source 4 shows us three poor men not looking very happy. These four sources show us that the London slums were a very crowded and dirty place to live in and if you did live there you were more likely to die at a young age

These four sources show that the London slums in 1902 were very crowded with people and also furniture and other objects, but in 1890 the streets were very bare and the people that were in the streets were mainly children who looked homeless. In the second source it shows that this girl had to look after a baby by herself and they obviously hadn't been showered or fed in ages. In source 4 it shows some men standing outside some place in scruffy clothes but still weren't as bad as other people showing that those three men maybe had a little more money than most people. All the kids have dirty chlothes on and no shoes. Not many had parents and the majority of them were homeless. In source 3 you can see that the London slums were filled with smog and were very dark and gloomy. People would've taken these photographs so that in the future you could see the changes made in London and to show how dirty and badly children were treated back then and it shows how much life in London and for children has improved.

Source one shows that it was a very poor place and not a very hygienic place you can tell this because they aren't in homes they are in the street sat on crates. Source two shows two children that look hungry and homeless and have no one to look after them you can tell this by the fact they are sat on their own. Source three shows a street with people sat at the side and the sky looks smoggy and the people look ill you can tell this because in between the buildings it is in clear and dirty. Source four shows three men looking miserable and they look like they are waiting for something this shows us that in 1899 it wasn't clean and bad time to live. People would have taken these photographs to see the changes in London.

We can see they are not so happy because they are not shown smiling.

In source 1 the street is covered with mess and rubbish, it is also very cramped. This was taken in Dorset St, Whitechapel in 1902 this is reliable because it gives us the name and date.

The children in source 2 have dirty feet and dirty clothes. They also have very messy hair, looking tired and sick.this is from the 1980s which isn't very reliable, as it doesn't have a specific or accurate date.

People in source 3 are looking miserable and very tired and worn out. They are all looking very bored and having a tough day to day life, this may be because it looks like there is much smog in the air making them Ill. We can alsonsee there are much less people here than in source 1, which was taken in 1902. This source is quite helpful by telling us it was taken in Whitechapel backstreet in 1890.

Source 4 shows us 3 miserable men. Who are east end loafers. The men are looking sick and tired much like everyone else in other sources and just standing around. This is a cartoon from Phil May 1899, which could not be 100% accurate as it is not a photo or a primary source.

Overall we can see how life in the 19th century was unpleasant because of the deadly smog and the many, many poor, dirty people on the streets. These photographs show the significant change in London over the past centuries.

These four sources show that London was dirty and crowded place to be. Families were living on the cold streets of London.

Source 2 shows that they might not have parents or any family. They look very young so this tells us that people in London had to defend for themselves.

Source 1 shows that it was a very crowded and cramped and many might be homeless.

Source 3 shows us in 1890 the streets weren't so busy, but there seemed to still be people around the streets.

The cartoon source 4 1899 shows us that they are sad and look quite depressed. Also they look wrinkly and worn out.

For the Dickens bleak house "black , dilapidated street, avoided by all decent people" shows that the streets weren't for posh or decent people because it was dirty and crouded.

For Dickens second bleak house " fog everywhere" shows that the smog got everywhere. This was a yellowy green smog which killed many people across London. This could be a primary source because Dickens wrote from his experiences in London and around the streets; that's why most of his stories are based on the Victorian era in England.

For the Dickens Oliver Twist "The kennel" is used in his writing to show it was a compact small area without much room. This also refers to the people being dogs or animals. Again this shows a bad side to Victorian England.

Lastly the Dickens Pickwick papers states"murky atmosphere" this tells us that it was dark murky and very grim place to live in. The air was thick and full of smog. You wouldn't be able to see as far as a arm's length because of how dirty it was.

Overall Victorian London was a dingy atmosphere and a unhappy place to live in because of how dirty the air and surroundings are. England in the Victorian's was not the place to be because of its health and Jack the ripper. He made it uncertain for people to live in London.

Source 1 shows how crowded the slums of London were. The pictures show people and a range of other materials in the the middle and at the sides of a narrow street. It's dated to 1902, white chapel, and is a photograph, so it is likely reliable. The photo was likely taken to show others unaware of the conditions what life was like.

Source 2 shows a young girl cradling a baby in her arms. Both are wearing old clothes and are covered in mud. It shows how poor the conditions people had to live in and how hard life was for young people in 1880. It is possibly a reliable source, however the picture has very little background, and so could've been set up. It was likely there for a similar reason to source one; To try and get people to help with the poverty these people were living in (even if they had to exaggerate).

Source 3 is a picture of a slightly bigger street with beggars and a few passers by in the street. The street seems covered in rubbish and the air looks like their is something in it (smog, maybe). It is likely a reliable source, as it is dated to 1890 and is a photograph of a whole street. It was likely taken to show what a street was like in the morning.

Source 4 is a cartoon of 3 men looking rather depressed while stood and sitting outside what appears to be a shop. This is not a reliable source, as it is a cartoon rather than a photograph, however that does not mean that it is a bad depiction of what life was like. It was likely created to show what life was like in
