Students can be inattentive, fail to do homework, and bring negative attitudes and even violence to the school. How we respond to these resistant behaviors will have a lifelong impact for students. When students feel like they matter, it *literally* helps them succeed.  

Another thing I found really interesting was how so much research had been put into disparities among ethnic and racial groups that gender within these groups had kind of been missed.

I give a Goal Essay at the beginning of every year that gives me an insight into who they are and what makes them tick. Seeing what their personal goals are helps me understand them better.
