Although pediatric psychiatry has come a long way over the years the issue is still prevalent today, especially for those children with disabilities and chronic illnesses. While of course the issue of mental and social well being in children is always a concern for parents/ families, it’s become an even bigger issue for researchers. According to the Findings of the Ontario Child Health Study (1987), “Much of the evidence associating chronic physical problems and mental health and adjustment problems comes from clinic-based studies and is often inconsistent in its conclusions.” The social and mental health varies for each child and may differ within the child’s disabilities or ailments, cultural backgrounds, and many other various aspects. The mental health assessment and treatment of youngsters with physical symptoms and illnesses commonly pose unique and often complex challenges to clinicians. (American Psychiatric Pub,2007) Using an interdisciplinary approach to study how to indicate and improve on the mental and social well being of disabled children is important to understand the issue and propose more efficient approaches for a solution.

The importance of researching and bringing this issue to light is vital for our country as our children are our future leaders of America. One in five children have a diagnosable mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder. Seventy-five percent of children do not receive mental health services. (SGRMH, 1999) With statistics like this, ignoring the issue can have more severe consequences for our future. That seventy-five percent of children who don’t receive mental health services will grow up to be mothers and fathers with various occupations whom suffer psychologically and physiologically. This is theoretically very dangerous for themselves and for those around them. Unfortunately, some of those children in that seventy-five percentile won’t make it to grow up at all with suicide being the leading cause of death in children suffering from social and mental health. It’s going to take a team with varying disciplines to assist socially, psychologically, and physiologically to save our children; as clinicians have dropped the ball.

Does the lack of Pediatric counseling affect mental fragile children?

Although research is ongoing, there is evidence that supports the theory that the absence of pediatric counseling affects children that are medically fragile. This includes the child(ren) who has a physical disability, chronic disease, and or developmental disorder. These children have experienced multiple significant health problems, sustained a debilitating injury, has chronic health problems, or those who have one or more manageable conditions that are not managed well. Environmental factors and biological problems contribute to the medically fragile child. Although the basic needs can be met from providers such as family members or entities based on circumstances, additional care is necessary and are often extensive. Many factors play a role in the lack of care such as insurance, transportation, financial security, distrust of health system, and the lack of education and resources. Social and political trends have resulted in the delivery of home-based care which reduces access to necessary health care and places the responsibility on the families. Stringent program eligibility requirements, stress, and other services for emotional, educational, and medical need places limitations on the families, thus affects their ability to receive the proper care for their children.

Through further research of on pediatric psychiatry and bettering the social and mental health of children, we have come across a multitude of information. Using various scholarly periodical sources, we’ve run into conflicting information. Our conflicting information stemmed from ongoing research and new findings as all research has. Also, we’ve had to ultimately compare and contrast ourselves to decipher which information was useful to our argument what was not based on the multiple aspects at hand. Ultimately some research was not broad enough. Pediatric psychiatry relates to many types of behavioral problems, and many mental health symptoms can keep children and adolescents from leading happy, successful lives which can be effectively treated with evidence-based therapies. However, not all mental health therapies for young people are valid, and some treatment options do not work the same for all behavioral and mental health disorders. Thorough studies of parent management training and cognitive-behavioral therapy in randomized controlled trials in children with behavioral disorders, and studies involving the transdiagnostic approach for treatment are currently underway. More work is needed to develop procedures for other types of aggressive behavior (i.e., relational aggression) that have been relatively neglected in clinical research. The role of counselors in response to behavioral interventions and treatment of irritability in children and other disorders continues to be investigated.
