RESPONSE FROM CODP

UNISON and CODP are as such one entity so if you join one, you join the other. I fully understand that some ODP’s may not want to join a Trade Union for a number of reasons (military personal are not allowed to), however that’s the current arrangement. As an ODP in clinical practice, I would advise to join a Trade Union, not to be militant, but to have representation in the case of a serious clinical incident which may go to court, or in the event of a grievance procedure with the employer. Fully understand though that some folk wish not to be in a union. For academics, there is a Memorandum of Understanding between UCU and UNISON therefore CODP membership is as such covered with UCU membership. It’s worth noting that a few of the other AHP professional bodies are Trade Unions also therefore the arrangement ODP’s have is not unique.
