"They were tough as nails" says Ponyboy because he views the group as a bunch of strong, tough guys. But this could also be viewed as a double entendre because the gang is not a very well-rounded group of boys and often get into trouble. Just as the nails the boys have sharp edges.

"I turned my head to look at him and in the moonlight he looked like some Greek god come to earth." states Ponyboy. this is a simile to state that his brother is handsome. He uses this simile because Greek god refers to a pagan god that originates in Greece. The gods are often very attractive. This contributes to the story because in the beginning we learn that Ponyboy isn't the most fond of his looks and is a jealous person stating that he wished he looked like Paul Newman

On this page one of the Socs "slugged" Ponyboy while they were beating him up. I did not understand what that meant. Slugged has multiple meanings but the one that made the most sense in this context was to fight off someone fiercely. In other words the Soc was hitting him to keep him from attempting to squeeze out of their grasp.

While describing Dallas Winston (A member of the gang) Ponyboy says that he has blue eyes of blazing ice as well as teeth of an animal. I think in this section he is using these similes to express that Dally is a fierce and wild character. His eyes are most likely a very light blue like ice. And the blazing is to express that his eyes are bold and piercing. Ponyboy says that his teeth are that of an animal because his teeth are most likely sharp and not very well-kept. Although he could of simply used similes that describe the colors of his teeth and eyes more clearly but he uses the similes to push the idea that he is a fierce and bold character.

"Johnny. . . He's been hurt bad sometime, hasn't he" This is referring to the time the guys found him crying in an ally after he got jumped by the Socs. He was bruised and bleeding so bad they almost had to bring to a hospital but we didn't have enough money for that.

Pony boy says that Johnny Cade was like "a little dark puppy that had been kicked too many times and is lost in a big crowd of strangers" He says this most likely to explain that Johnny is younger and overlooked by those above him. It also implies that he most likely doesn't have good parents or no parents at all. As well as the part that says he is lost in a crowd of strangers supporting the fact that he always has a nervous look in his eye (says Ponyboy) and was probably lost in life and didn't have a very bright future.

This quote shows importance because its kind of showing who Darry as a person kind of is. In the sense that he is surely making ponyboy work for his gratification.

"And i look about as much as Soda as you." In this scene Johnny tells Pony that he looks like Soda. Pony aggressively disagrees and walks away. I think this is because Pony finds Soda so attractive and wishes to look like him as he doesn't like his own looks. In one of my previous padlets i explain that Pony is insecure about his looks. I think he gets mad here because he thinks Johnny is just saying this to be kind because Pony is just fine in his own opinion

"I'm dying, I thought, and wondered what was happening to Johnny. I couldn't hold my breath any longer. I fought again desperately but only sucked in water. I'm drowning, I thought, they've gone too far... A red haze filled my mind and I slowly relaxed."This is an example of repetition. He does this to display his vulnerability in the situation when he was being drowned. He uses short descriptive sentences that start with 'I'. This displays his inability in the scene by making it feel like he is drowning while writing this.

"I swear, sometimes he reminds me of a colt" Said Ponyboy speaking about Sodapop. I had never heard of a colt while reading this. A colt is a young male horse. In this point of the book Sodapop is very excited and jumpy. Ponyboy probably says this because a young horse would be very adventurous and child-like in their mannerisms.

This shows that he is kinda nervous and maybe a little regretful because he is repeating words and sentences.

"I walked down the hall in a daze. Dally had taken the car and I started the long walk home in a stupor." Ponyboy writes this in Chapter 10. Stupor means a state of near-unconsciousness. Ponyboy says this when Johnny had just died. He says this because he walks home very depressed and drained of energy as he had just watched one of his best friends die. He probably was walking slowly and un-life-like.

"But Johnny was right. He died gallant." Ponyboy says this referring to the death of Dally. This is a callback to earlier in the book when Johnny and Ponyboy were talking about what country boys were like. They said that the boys were 'gallant' (meaning brave) and shortly after Johnny said that Dally was like the country boys in the sense that he was brave enough to always take the fall for his gang. In this moment when Pony thinks about the death of Dally, he reflects on how he felt about Dally and what he had said about him with johnny.

"So Soda had to content himself with bouncing up and down on the bed and pounding on my shoulder" This is a hyperbole displaying how much energy Sodapop had in this moment when he came dashing out of his room to see Ponyboy and Darry. He had so much energy because he was attempting to rough house and mess around with Pony but Darry told Soda to not be rough.

"Soda looked back at him indignantly." I did not know what this word meant while reading. Indignantly means to do something in a manner that displays annoyance. Soda was annoyed because he wanted to mess around with Pony but when Darry came he told Soda to not get rough. So when Darry left the room, Soda was planning on messing around with Pony because Darry had left, but he once again uttered to stop rough housing. This had made Soda look at Darry annoyed with him.

"We gotta win that fight tonight," Dally said. His voice was hard. "We gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny" showing that dally and the gang truly cared about johnny when they dedicated the fight to johnny because of the adversities he just recently faced. Showing how loyal the gang truly is.

This is a quote of wisdom from The outsiders, I picked it because it is a quote that relates to most parts of the story. Ponyboy and Danny stick together and they are best friends and "brothers of the gang."

I chose this quote because it is an act of courage from the Outsiders, it shows that the Outsiders are good people just misunderstood.

"When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home..." The Outsiders didn't get to experience the average childhood experience so they were grateful and lucky when they did fun things in the town.

a stupor is a state of near un-consciousness. Pony is in this state because he is dazed and defeated by the death of Johnny that he is not fully there in the moment.

"Ponyboy," Soda said softly, like he was talking to an injured animal" In this moment Pony had just found out that Dally is dead. He is shocked by this and starts shaking although he is about to cry. Soda treats him like a 'injured animal' because he is in a sensitive state and Soda is nervous to say something that will bring Pony down.

I had heard this word before but i wasn't 100% certain of what it meant here. It means that he is in a disturbed state typically caused by illness or intoxication. This makes sense because his stomach was uneasy in this part of the book.

This quote is from the end of the book referring to the beginning of the book. This reveals the whole book was a theme that Pony was writing to reveal his story. He wrote it for his English class. This is a shocking and content conclusion to the story.

"Dally didn't die a hero. He died violent and young and desperate" This is Pony saying how the public would perceive his death because he knows that the editorials wouldn't side with them no matter how they died simply because they were the greasers. The world would perceive them as idiots who got themselves killed for no reason besides there own ignorance and although he wish he didn't, Pony agreed that he died a desperate child with nothing going for him if he lived.
