It seemed repetitive and unnecessary to put a summary of your essay before you started writing. But after spending a semester reading hundreds of articles, peer-reading essays, and composing my own essays, I see the utility. Often, I don't really have the time or the interest to read every single word on the paper. A BLUF gives me a much better idea about what I will be reading, and why I should take the time to read something. A good BLUF captures my attention and makes me want to read something, while a poor BLUF, or a lack of BLUF tells me that I don't need to spend time reading the essay!

When I started writing for the Bush School, I was really intimidated. When you compare the different styles (literary analysis compared to policy brief, for instance), it can seem like a completely different language. This class has given me the tools I need to write memos, policy briefs, and everything in between.
