Aphrodite has been tied to the beginning of the Trojan war, taking place between the City of Troy and the Greeks. She was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and the sea-nymph Thetis. To show her discontent, Aphrodite left a single golden apple at the table and said that only the fairest goddess could eat it. The other gods saw the turmoil caused by the apple and decided to have a judgement. The most handsome mortal, in this time a Trojan youth named Paris, would choose the most beautiful goddess. The three final contestants; Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena; did not allow him to choose just on beauty. Each offered him a different prize. Hera, the goddess of the house, offered him the most powerful army and he would also be the most powerful ruler in the mortal world. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, would allow him to be the most wise mortal. Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful mortal woman and that they would be in true love. Paris choose Aphrodite, swayed by Helene the beautiful woman. Later, when Helene is kidnapped, Paris and the Trojans raged war on the Greeks, beginning the Trojan War.
