In the 2011 Supreme Court case "Snyder v. Phelps" had to do with people protesting at veterans funerals holding signs with homophobic slurs on them. The Supreme Court decision was that they had the right to protest under the First Amendment. The homophobic slurs are an exact example of hate speech.
