The kids were able to get enrolled into Mary S. Black Elementary school and they were excited to learn along with other students rather than learning everything with their dad. After,  they thought things were going to get better dad loses his job and the kids were worried that they were going to have to move again but then with Rose Mary’s teaching degree she was able to get a job teaching at the school. “Once mom started teaching, I thought maybe we’d be able to buy new clothes, eat cafeteria lunches, and even spring for a nifty extras like the class picture the school took every year” (Walls 76). Jeannette states, “It was a mansion, practically, so big that Grandma Smith had had two families living in it, both paying her rent”(Walls 95). The family was so excited and very great full  that they were able to stay, however, Rex and Grandma Smith didn’t get along to well, “Grandma would yell at Mom not to let that worthless horse’s ass take her grandchildren”(Walls20). While they stay, Rex and Rose Mary drive the Oldsmobile back to Phoenix, Lori, Jeannette, Brian, and Maureen were left home with Erma, when Erma decided to mend the inseam of Brains pants, Lori and Jeannette walked into the room while Brain was crying and Erma was inappropriately touching Brian. When Rex and Rose Mary got back from their trip, the girls tried to explain what happened, but Erma twisted it and Rex and Rose Mary believed her, “Erma relegated us to the basement after that”(Walls 147). This shows signs of neglect, sexual assault, and mental and physical abuse for example, “Erma reached over to slap me, but Lori caught her hand... Jeannette talks about her falling out of the Green Caboose, she shows how she’s more worried about her Mounds Bar then herself, “I rolled several yards off the embankment... grit in my eyes and mouth... blood was running down my forehead and flowing out of my nose... At this point the rest of the family didn’t believe that this is not how he would have wanted to end his life.
