Most of the people in Finland are lutheran. Christmas Eve is the most popular day in the church's year, when families go to church. Some people attend the Chriatmas Eve church service and many visit cemeteries to light candles on the craves of their deceased relatives and loved ones. Towards the darkening evening, the cemeteries are gloving with twinkling lights. In Finland we have also night church that starts at midnight

Traditionally people go to sauna before eating but nowadays people will also go in the evening. Christmas sauna used to be the most important event at Christmas. Finns do this thing which is called ”vihta” and it’s made twigs from birch. After that we go to sauna and we hit our backs with that. We also have a sauna elf and people are telling different stories about it.😛

Santa Claus is a fictional character. He has a long white beard and he wears red clothes. He has a big tummy, long white beard and is married to Joulumuori ( Mrs. Claus ). Fun fact you didn't know is that Santa Claus lives in Finland. No he doesn't live in North Pole. He's the boss of elfs, and brings gifts to children all over the world, and he has reindeers that he uses to travel around the world. Santa Claus is a big part of finnish christmas, because he visits us on Christmas Eve. It's quite different in every family, but usually he gives us gifts and children sing to him and we give him treats. Sometimes he comes the night before and leaves the gifts under the tree. Most children stop believing at age four to seven.

Unlike most of the countries, we open our Christmas presents on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. Santa Claus either shares the gifts or leaves them under the Christmas tree the night before the Eve. Ilari's best ever Christmas gift was a little racing track with Formula 1 cars, driven by Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. Juho's best ever Christmas gift was a computer. Aleksi's best ever Christmas gift was a phone. Viljami's best ever Christmas gift was a piano. Our teacher Terhi's best ever Christmas gift was a barbie doll when she was 10-years-old. She still has it.

Christmas trees became popular in Finland towards the end of the 19th century. Usually christmas trees are spruces. They are decorated with electric candles or lights, silver or golden ribbons, colored glass balls and other kinds of ornaments. At the top of the tree there is a silver or a golden star. Nowadays many people like to get and decorate their tree as early as about a week before christmas. Plastic trees have become more popular in recent times.
