This is what rest looks like for me...salty sea air, ocean breeze, waves, and the shells jingling in the surf that quiet my thoughts and restore my spirit.

Rest looks like the water and the sand for me. I feel the closest to those I have lost when I am at the beach. It gives me the reminder that infinity of the ocean water can bring new waves, ripples and floods but the calm after all that keeps me returning to the same place for the same rest with my family and friends.

For me, rest involves hanging out with my little feather puppies. Even cleaning the barn or filling buckets gives me time to meditate on important words, recharge and relax. And when I'm done the chores and sit down to spend time with them, they come over and chew on my shoes and chat at me.

Rest for me is watching a good game on TV with friends. Often doesn't matter what type of sport, just being with friends and away from the everyday stuff.

Rest for me looks like any time I spend with Josh, Gavin, and our babies with fur and feathers. :-)

For me rest is being able to step away from everyone else and being able to have a few moments to myself to either just sit in silence or to do something like scroll social media. In my roles at my jobs I always feel that someone is in need of something from me at all times. Due to this it is nice to be able to step away and isolate myself from those environments at times and just do something that I want to do with no demands from others.

For me, rest means spending time with my daughters at Niagara Falls and then hopping over to NYC next week. I’ve really enjoyed my getaways with both of them.

Rest is creating something new, expressive, funny or interesting. Sometimes when I am very tired mentally or physically, something in me says you've got to make something -- with your hands, so I follow that inner directive. This is when I can't get to a body of water though. I'd rather be in the ocean, river, lake, pool, pond, waterfalls, etc.

Rest, for me, is found during time spent with my animals—especially my horse. Whether I’m riding, training, competing, or simply doing barn chores, grooming, or hand grazing, those moments bring a deep sense of peace. It’s less about physical stillness and more about emotional grounding. Animals, especially horses, are incredibly intuitive—they seem to sense exactly when you need to pause, breathe, and just be. In fact, they often require you to stay emotionally balanced, which naturally holds you accountable for managing your stress and making space for true rest.

This is the ultimate image of rest to me. Being close to nature and laying down or sitting and looking at God's creation, the sky, the land, listening to the birds, or just the wind blowing. My mind is peaceful, no agendas, no disturbances. This is the moment the world is still, and my mind is at ease.

For me, rest is driving while listening to music that helps settle my soul. It’s in those quiet moments on the road when the world slows down and everything feels a little more manageable.

When I’m at home, rest looks like my Maine Coon kitten coming to me when she senses something’s wrong, when I’m sad or not feeling well. She climbs into my lap and insists I rub her, as if she’s taking care of me. After a while, she starts to pet me with her big, furry tail. I can’t help but laugh, and somehow, everything feels lighter. I feel more at peace.

For me, rest is finding some time for stillness (of body & mind), peaceful reflection (to learn from recent events), and prayer (asking for the wisdom, peace, and guidance). The best place to find this for me is in church and out on the water.

I have found that after the Navy and being gone all the time and working here at the college, I get my zen at home. I love my kids and I miss them because they are moving out and getting married. I have a new dog at home and he is my buddy, Hoss. He keeps me busy. I do find the most peace when at sea and able to walk the decks of the ship in the evening during sunsets. That was my favorite time to rest.

I love my family, I love my time alone. My favorite time ever for rest was at the end of the day when at sea, I would walk the decks outside the skin of the ship during the sunsets or at night to look at the stars. My buddy is Hoss.

Rest for me is spending time with my family. I love being outside. I enjoy yardwork. My favorite place to visit is the beach when I can. Sitting in the sand listening to the waves helps me forget about the stresses of life.

THIS IS REST for me!!

All jokes aside, rest is being in my safe place. My safe place consists of my HOME with my family. Being a mom of a 12- and 7-year-old, there is no rest for this Mama (the bathroom is not even safe) but being content all under one roof with no agenda is my rest and my safe haven.

It is sad to say, but I never get true rest. I am always working on something or doing something, to the point I have been made aware I have to make some lifestyle changes! Both my son and girlfriend have told me I need to put the CPU down, and find a TV show to indulge in. I have a fear at retirement, I will not know how to retire and relax. If I could relax, I would say laying back in my recliner with family and friends watching a good movie would be great!

Having to drive or ride anywhere used to be such a bother. I always felt I was wasting time. It is now a safe space. Over the last several years, I have looked at it so differently. Turning my commute into a pocket of stillness, reflection, or prayer shows that rest isn't always about stopping; sometimes, it's about slowing your spirit even when your body is moving. (Thank you, COVID!) Now I realize it is a quiet space to and from work where I can be uninterrupted. My notifications are cut off on my phone. I take the time to talk to God, practice mindful gratitude, and just be.
