In 1693 schools were not as educational as they are now. The College of William and Mary was a boy school and they went when they were 12 to15. They learned reading, writing, and arithmetic. Some older boys could study to become priests in the Church of England (Anglican Church). In 1693 girls did not go to school, instead they stayed home with mothers and learned how to ,cook, sew, and other skills from their mothers and older sisters. Some girls attended "dame schools." (Dame means "woman" or "lady.") Dame schools were run by women in their homes. Parents hired these women to teach small groups of girls. The girls learned prayers, the alphabet, knitting, and sewing. Education for both girls and boys included strict lessons in "civility" (manners).
Now every one can go to school and learn. There are some girl and boy schools that you can go to if you want, or there are some privite schools. But most schools are public schools. if you go to a private school or an all girl or all girl school you are taught ettiqutte.
Here are 3 differences about school in 1693 and school today. 1 diffrence is that the boys got more education than the girls in 1693. Another diffrence is there are schools were girls and boys go to school together today. The last diffrence is there are no dame school in todays schools.
