Salinity, or the measure of dissolved salt in the water, is the determining factor of the freshwater biome. The low salinity of freshwater ecosystems provides a natural source of almost potable water. In order for the freshwater biome to be supplemented with water, it requires precipitation. The water cycle naturally filters water and run off provides it to freshwater biomes. Algae and bacteria in the enviornment provide nutrients for animals. Due to a lack of carnivorous creatures or predators in the freshwater biome, animals are not in dyer need of tools like claws to defend themselves. One adaptation of geese and duck is their feet.
