Among the many abiotic factors including temperature, sunlight, and pollutants, the primary contributing abiotic factors of the freshwater biome include salinity, climate, and precipitation. Salinity, or the measure of dissolved salt in the water, is the determining factor of the freshwater biome. The low salinity of freshwater ecosystems provides a natural source of almost potable water. In order for the freshwater biome to be supplemented with water, it requires precipitation. The water cycle naturally filters water and run off provides it to freshwater biomes. Finally, climate sustains temperature and other characteristics of the biome.

Many of the biotic factors of freshwater ecosystems are composed of primary consumers due to the fact that many of the animals in the biome are herbivores. Cattails and other plants of the biome provide food for primary consumers or herbivores leaving lots of energy throughout the food chain. Algae and bacteria in the enviornment provide nutrients for animals. Due to a lack of carnivorous creatures or predators in the freshwater biome, animals are not in dyer need of tools like claws to defend themselves. One adaptation of geese and duck is their feet. Allowing them to glide through the water with their wide feet and travel on land to catch prey and build nesting.

Algae and phytoplankton provide much of the necessary energy for small fish by utilizing energy from the sun, just the way that all producers do. Fish, such as lake trout are the primary consumers of the freshwater biome, and when their productivity is low, the ecosystem around them will support only fish adapted to sustaining low nutrient levels. Geese and swans, being amphibious creatures, do not need to adapt to survive only in lakes and other bodies of water; however, they do take part in eating fish in the freshwater biome.
