I asked my students the question about school, but I really liked the answer they gave me about how they use ICT for homework.

In my class for reading, I have asked the students to do fluency checks on their reading, to increase their speed. Some of my students are using

FACETIME to time their learning partner during the fluency check, from home because in the classroom, you need to work with a partner. Ithought this was a clever ideaof using technology to work from home, doing school work.

I have asked my kids about technology used this year at school and they got to the point that there is a big difference between how it is used in class and how it is used outside. They all came to the conclusion that outside the classroom they are more used to playing games by themselves which are entertaining but kind of boring at the end. While at school they discovered they can still play through ad hoc apps and while doing they learn math, literacy etc and they can also create their own product such as a presentation, video, audio interactive ebook etc. And this makes the great difference!

I asked my student about the use of the ICT and they ansered that they only use them in some subjects -arts and crafts, science en English (some times) and ICT are the majority of the time used by the teacher. They would like to using more because they are accustomed to using at home ' my father lend me his Tablet or mobile phone and y use it to paint, take photos, solve puzzles and so on' is the most common answer to my question. I asked Grade 1 students what they like about the new Starboards we have been using since January. They like playing games, watching videos and doing action songs. They also like that I scan a copy of their text books into a Powerpoint presentation, so that when we are working we can have a large version of the page projected onto the IWB. Grade 8 students are looking forward to the introduction of ipads next year as they won't have to continue carrying heavy text books. They also found the Starboards are great for doing presentations as they don't have to control them from the computer. They also like having wifi at school as they have access to information at any time.

I asked a10 year sixth grader about what he thinks about the use of ICT in my school and this is what he had to say.

I now enjoy learning ICT because our school has really invested in ICT. that is , the school has provided almost all ICT tools and has really made learning a fun for me. especially when I get to use the Paint application to draw any image that comes to my mind.

The school also uses computers to fill our report cards and we are able to get them before we go on vacation unlike previous times when our reports used to be hand written. It feels so nice to submit assignments on our school's website instead of writing it in books. .

My only problem is that there is always power outage and it makes it difficult to use the computer lab often.

Then I asked him, how different is using ICT inside the school from using it outside the school?

He replied, using ICT in the school is limited to what your teacher says. But using it outside the school gives you the chance to explore more things.

I asked a 5 year 4 pupils what they thought about the schools use of technology. The reoccurring trend was that the school initially used it a lot because it was new, different and fun but now it doesn't use it as much.

They said that they would like it to be more creative in lessons i.e. finding information via the iPads rather than books and also playing more educational games than a sheet based alternative.

When asking how they would describe the difference in the use of ICT inside and outside school? The common consensus was that in school technology was used primarily for learning and aiding them to 'get better' in lessons like Maths and English, whilst at home it was for games and having fun.

My primary school students love ICTs, particularly boys (gender issue here?) - they fight over

the tablets/ipads. They love computer literate teachers and think it's cool to be seen with a laptop

outside class, However, my own daughter (high school) gets sick of all her lessons on a laptop - and

described ICTs at school as "annoying". Likewise my highschool son says "it's a tool, that's all."

So primary school might be THE place for ICTs.

Every summer I work in the UK and besides lessons which often includes video, we do workshops which accumulate to some kind of presentation, video, drama, model construction, photos hop. The students integrate quickly together, they perhaps connect and feel safe with the computer, as opposed to having to being centre of the workshop. The results are amazing. It certainly allows them to express their world, creativity and allows the teacher to understand them bettter.

They have only JUST received laptops to use in class that they do tests on.

Smartboards for warm up activities and to search google as a class and watch youtube.

Also use them for distance Japanese classes. Also have a computer lab. All in all a bit disappointing

It’s fun. If we use the smartboard it’s easier. But sometimes there’s problem with the wifi. Sometimes there’s not enough ipads if someone forgets theirs at home. Ipads are not just for playing games, but also for learning.

They use very little ICTs at school. It's about learning to use a computer rather than integrating ICTs in teaching. At home, I use a lot of educational games to practice maths, spelling, grammar and watch videos on history/geography lessons. But, he only sees that as "fun" not work.

At school, only one subject is supported systematically by technology. Sometimes we use the interactive whiteboard to watch presentations, and videos related to some specific part of the subject, but not too often. It’s a shame because I do love using technologies in the classroom.

We don't use technologies in subjects like maths, or language. We use them mostly in sciences. This year we've been told to work in groups of four students to create a presentation about one animal. We've chosen crocodiles, so we've been seeking information using the computer, and we're working together to create the presentation, which we'll show to our peers in the classroom. We'll share with them all what we've learned about crocodiles.

At home, we've been also working using the internet and the computer searching information, elaborating the slides, choosing images, and so on. I usually use the computer at home to play games, and watch videos, always in my spare time and after doing my homework. Homework, rarely entails the use of the computer.

Students who were interviewed ranged from 5 to 12 years. They all have a positive regard to technology and are happy to engage with apps and the hands on gadgets with little teacher input. All books/material are in an online environment. And I think that is good, you can work from anywhere and all school work is in one place. We also use google drive and classroom and you can hand in your work directly online. We use PowerPoint to create more advanced presentation.
In school I think we don't get enough time to work on projects where ICT is involved. At home I can spend as much time as I need to get the result I want. In school for example I can get maybe only 30 minutes to make a movie whereas at home I might spend hours and days even!

After talking to a few students on how they feel about the use of ICT in our school I several interesting feedbacks:

"I think the digital board should be more interactive."

"I love technology classes because I can be creative."

These two sum up the big picture of the school. In regular classes, where students can see content on the digital board, they don't get to participate that much, so that gives them the feeling of still being just a "consumer" and not "producer" with the technology.

On the other hand, on specific tech classes they learn how to make games and use robotics and can be creative in that process.

Regarding using tech inside and outside school most of them talked about the limitation of smartphone usage at school and how at home it's more free.

I like the technology at my school. We have ICT class once per week where each of us have a computer screen with its own brain, mouse and keyboard (PC). In ICT we do coding, research for our projects and sometimes we get to type and print a label for something we have made (like my diorama of a Snow Leopard). We also do maths tests on these computers. My teacher has a personal ipad that she uses to take photos for our class twitter account. We have a set of ipads in our class but not enough for one each, we use them in groups.

I had a talk with a couple of students at my school about the integration of ICT in their lessons. They all commented that it makes learning fun and interactive for them as they avail a variety of tools to research and present their work.
They use ICT in all the subjects that are being taught even in their national language.

The kids enjoying using technology in school. They able to do the self-learning in any way using various technology tools. They able to find the information using search engine quickly. Besides, they love to use various presentation tools like prezi in the school to make their presentation attractive.

During one of class, the students share with me their usage of ICT inside and outside of school. They tell me that while inside school, they more focusing using ICT tools for learning and they feel that it was so much fun using various ICT tools while learning. "It's made learning so much easier. When I have to do bookwork it's so boring and I don't remember anyway. If I get to do my table math, it teaches me how to do it and then tells me if I get it wrong and why. I like reading on the tablet a lot too. There are so many books and I can just type whatever subject I want to learn about and it will give me books I can pick. Reactions of the students were different depending on the grade level. In the grade 4 and 5 wing, students loved the variety of ways they were learning to interact with tech, using one note and sway to organize, collaborate and present. The Grade 4 students especially like the math prodigy program and will play for hours at home as well.
In the younger grades, kids loved the bit of time they got to spend on devices, but access is limited and they wished that they could spend more time. Our Grade 3s are invited to come and code during recess, and some students have really taken advantage of the opportunity.

Translation and summary of our conversation:
I like using technology at school because it's funny. We play and we don't work in the computer lab. (...) Well... we also process text and make some presentations (PowerPoint) (...) In our classroom, we use the interactive whiteboard to watch videos, correct the exercises of our book, listen to music... (Do you shear some school activity with parents? how?) Yes. For example, the other day we did a dance that our teacher recorded and uploaded to the school website and then, at home, I showed it to my mum.

It was an English lesson for a class of 6-year-old second language learners. They were learning about the sentence structure "I have...", so I asked them to choose one kind of stationary and use the iPad to take photo of them. Then they have to write a sentence saying "I have two pencils." underneath the photo. Students enjoyed the activity a lot, even they had to write a whole sentence in English, which was a bit difficult for some low achievers, they were very motivated and students were helping each other out. I asked how they felt about the lesson and they said they loved it because they got to use the iPad and the activity was really fun. When I asked my students the question:
Q: "What do you think about how technology is being used in our school?"
The overwhelming response was:
"Not enough!!!!!"
Students wanted ICT integrated into everyday learning. Some wanted to stop writing altogether and only use computers, iPads or laptops for all their learning at school. Others just wanted designated times where they could freely use an electronic device or designated times for "research".
Another common theme that I noticed not from asking this question but throughout the school year was that students noticed a disconnect between parent and teacher expectations around technology in school. Students knew they were fighting a constant battle with parents because of their use of technology at home and so they would often approach their teacher to and ask for communication between teacher and parent about technology use at school so that they could bring their laptop or iPad. While parents were happy to allow students to bring electronic devices with teacher permission there is still the sense that any technological device belongs at home or in the computer lab.
The overwhelming consensus of my students was that technology belongs in the classroom and they wanted it there yesterday.

Before the new teacher arrived the classes were really boring but since he arrived he used our mobile phones to play in the classroom with educational games and quizzes. Using telephones in class also helps us a lot to look for words we do not know, or just to write better thanks to the help of online dictionaries. He enjoys the experience of learning and playing on the computer and IPad at school, he is given small activities on the iPad in school and he learns better through this method. At school the parents allow him to use the mobile phone or the iPad only once or twice a week or only when he has to study or do an assignment, he gets to use the iPad for fun only on weekends and for about 1 hour. He said “I don’t get to use Mobile and iPad at home, I love to play games when I am free. . . .But I get to use it only to study which I don’t like”.

I asked my students which class they like most. All students said in one voice computer period and than the classes in which computer, presentations on smart board or multimedia is shown. They learn typing in proper way at such an early stage and are interested to spend more time in learning more of these skills. but at home, they mostly play games and are interested in watching movies. Govand is a fifth grader at a private school in Kurdistan Region in Iraq. He states that sometime their science teacher uses touch screen monitor to teach them and they have computer Lab that they use for computer lesson. THE DIFFERENCE IN THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY INSIDE AND OUTSIDE SCHOOL

The use of technology inside school and outside school are quite similar. The difference lies in the purpose to which it is put.

In school, technology is used in multimedia presentations, for the notes written by our teachers in PowerPoint, for computing classes, for quizzes, research in some subjects and projects, library studies and just for relaxation sometimes when we see educational movies. Outside school however, I see technology in the Apps we use, the street lights, in the stores, cinemas and other places. Technology has entered our school and apart from following the traditional methods of teaching and learning and reading from only books we started using other sources of information like web, blogs ,PDF files online articles from academic websites . The teachers use projectors and allowed us to use iPad and laptop to prepare and submit the assignments . We give mock test and exams in online .our teachers gives us marks and prepares a platform where we join to interact with her . We also use certain programs which is designed to give us feedback and we can redo our work . we always remain connected to a teachers and also ask questions about other topics which is not related to the syllabus. Our parents can also update and track success or achievement by a certain apps that link our parents with the school and specifically with the teacher .we also enjoy technology not only for learning but also by showcasing our creativity by using storytelling ,drawing, creating web pages to showcase our talents . it as a fun learning and it helps in application of what you have learnt in theory . Difficult subjects like maths English and maths is made easy by gamification ,where there are certain levels low average and high we can challenge different people and our own classmates and polish our knowledge

however with regard to use of Technology inside the school in outside the school there is a huge difference. inside the school we have access to only programs which are education related to Academics and play games which improve our subject and are related to the curriculum only . but outside the school we have more wider access to the games . We play what we want to play which are just for fun . we can access social media and on a larger scale such sites in schools are blocked.

I have asked Pedro about what he thought about the use of ICT in the school and he told me:
"We don't use computers a lot, but we use the digital whiteboard all the days. However, I would like to use more computers or tablets because it is so interesting and we can search a lot of things, like I do at home".
So, as it can be seen, in his classroom (an in his school) they don't have one-to-one computers or tablets and the main tool or resource they use is the interactive digital whiteboard. The child explained me that sometimes they did homework in the computer, like presentations or something like that, but it was not very common.
As for the difference between using ICT in the school and using them in home, he told me:
"At home, I use the computer, the mobile phone and the PlayStation for entertainment and in the school we use the digital whiteboard or the computer for learning. It is totally different, but I like using ICT in the school because everything is easier to be understood"

My students like school better, when they can do different activities and use ICT to get to their knowledge. For them it's more entertaining learning through ICT because there are a lot of different ways how they can get to their information. My student told me that their favorite way to get information was through watching illustrated YouTube videos or when the information is converted into a PowerPoint, because that way, it's easier for them to understand the topic. They also think that it's something completely different using ICT in school than at home, because at home they use it rather to entertain themselves and in school they use it to educate themselves.

This question was asked to Chris a 10 year old boy attending a primary school. He noted that; we do not have computers in our classes and my teachers do not use a computer to teach us. Our school has one computer lab where only a few children can use the computer accompanied by their teacher. Technology is not used enough in my school. Sometimes it is even hardly used.

2. How would you describe the difference in the use of technology inside and outside of school?
Inside class- The only use of technology used inside my classroom is phablets and cellphones. I do not have a phablet but classmates would use the phablets to play games and to access videos on YouTube. But we do not learn in the classroom on our computer. We write our notes in our exercise books.
Outside class- I think that technology in the home is better than the ones used in school. Mommy thought me how to go on YouTube to learn more about topics in Grammar, Mathematics and Science. Looking at the videos is very colourful and engage my attention.

My nieces 12 and 7 years old, both made the same comment. They talked about how much they love the use of ICT, but also they would like to see it happen more. The only time they use it is to view a video on a projector. The younger one would like gaming to be part of the ICT learning process while the older one would like to be asked more often to come up with videos, presentations and be able to collaborate with her friend as much as possible. Outside of school, the young one uses her tablet to talk with family online, share photos of her drawings with us, and Youtube to view animations, toy reviews, hacks and stories about Egypt. in our school, which is an international one, we can use iPads in classroom, only approved by teachers and we use them often for research in science, social studies, math or literature. Any time we are allowed to use computer technologies or websites and apps to help our studies is a joy and so much fun. As learners of English as a second language, the use of iPads helps us with our writing skills, confidence while speaking, reading...Outside of school, this is how we make our homework (by writing in Word, PowerPoint documents, we use different websites such as Quizlet and Kahoot for reviewing lessons before tests. Most students found use of ICT very stimulating to their 5 senses and engaging. Also since the e content is always available to them , they can refer to it again and again, thus helping them learn at their own pace.

As I am currently not a teacher, I have not been able to ask primary school children. Instead I have consulted Primary Curriculum: Teaching the Foundation Subjects (2008) edited by Rosemary Boys and Elaine Spink, specifically the section on History. Paragraphs on the use of ICT refer to the use of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) to support teaching and learning for displaying flipcharts. Other ways in which ICT can be incorporated into learning activities include the use of word processing (which allows for editing and redrafting) and presentation software for presenting findings of group-based research projects. The internet can be used to search for information with children directed to authoritative websites like the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery etc. Using databases is also suggested as it allows historical information to be handled and analysed. It suggests consulting existing databases available online, or encouraging students to create their own databases providing the example of a graveyard survey. A war memorial might offer a similar opportunity to construct a database.

Many of them expressed that they were not exposed to ICT in their earlier years and much of what they learned comes from social media. When asked what they think about how technology is being used in your school” a student of mine indicated that she loves the new upgrade, as we just received promethean boards and laptops (1 to 1). She noted that it’s fun and there is so much they can use it for, like watching YouTube videos, making charts and picking students using the spin wheel. according to the child the experience of learning using ICT (at on line school) was only first done during Covid-19. Then you had to have your own device at home and join classes, submit homework/assignments and even participate in Physical Education class. It was a little hard at first to learn how to use the computer but it was interesting and fun. Now that schools have reopened, the only chance of students using computers is in the Secondary School level. so I do not use any computers at school since I am in the Primary level. They used to discuss how their parents have been learning on chalk boards but now teachers are using digital electronic white boards Teachers are teaching students everything technical from MS Word to Google Docs and Google Slides. Well, I think technology in school is pretty cool because it helps us learn stuff in a fun way, like using tablets for quizzes or watching videos that explain tricky topics. My learner is from grade 5. She said that she enjoys the technologies in her school. Some of the things she mentioned:

There is a good balance of using them and not.

We use them in all subject areas.

I like being to communicate with my friends on projects when we use Google Slides.

I also like having email this year, because I can talk to my teachers in a different way than I could before.

And I love being able to get login to my account at home if I need to work on anything or check my email from home.

I spoke with several third-grade students, and they told me they enjoy bringing their tablets or laptops to school. They admitted that sometimes they’re tempted to play, but they understand they shouldn’t do things they’re not supposed to during class. They have agreements with their teachers: after finishing a forum activity or watching an educational video, they’re allowed a short free time. Little by little, they are becoming more autonomous with their devices, and they really enjoy it when the teacher uses the videobeam to show examples or explain topics.

When asked about how technology is used in their school, a group of students from a rural school shared: “We like using the tablets and laptops when the teacher lets us. It helps us understand better, especially when we watch videos or play learning games. But sometimes the internet is slow, and not all classes use ICT. I had a wonderful chat with a bright-eyed three grader named Iqbal about technology in his school, and his perspective was so pure and powerful. I've interviewed a grade two and three school children and ask them about technology being used in school and both of them said that they would enjoy taking and using there tablets for learning in school because they would use it to watch educational videos,doing research and using chatgpt to solve them complex problems. At school technology is used by teachers mainly to help with educational purposes such as reading, Spelling, Mathematics, and presentations. However at home technology is mostly used for playing games, watching youtube,and whatsapp chat. The students said that technology makes learning for them much easy and that the have move freedom at home to use tech gadgets. Overall, the students believes that technology is very helpful in school and they encourage the use of it in schools.

I asked a group of primary school students how they use technology in school. They said that at school, technology is mostly used for simple tasks such as watching videos, answering questions on the interactive board, or completing basic digital activities. However, outside of school, they use technology much more actively — for watching videos, playing games, using social media, and communicating with friends.

In my observation, there is a clear difference between how ICT is used in school and outside of it. In school, it is often limited and controlled, while outside school, children use technology more freely and creatively. This shows that schools still need to find more meaningful and engaging ways to integrate ICT into learning.
