Cocaine is an intense, euphoria-producing stimulant drug with strong addictive potential. The drug looks like small irregularly shaped chunks of a whitish solid. It is usually distributed as a white, crystalline powder. Its street names are coca, coke, crack, flake, snow, and soda cot. Cocaine was invented in 1860 by a graduate student . Albert Niemann, first purified the active ingredient of coca leaves. He extracted the active alkaloid from the leaf and named it cocaine. In 1863 Pope Leo XIII made a coca-based drink. Cocaine was later removed from that drink.
