Exemplar ECR:

I think Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees has made many important contributions to science. Before her discoveries, people believed many incorrect things about these animals. One of the most important contributions to science is how people used to believe that they were not an intelligent species. However, after her observations, she discovered that they use tools and express their emotions.

First, chimpanzees are omnivorous animals, and their diet consists of meat, plants, and insects, specifically termites. But termites live in narrow dirt mounds, and she discovered that chimpanzees use tools to get this delicious treat. This is a complex behavior for an animal. Before her discoveries, the only known tool-using animal was humans. In Chapter 14, page 115, the text says the following regarding this behavior: “Goodall observed a chimp using blades of grass into a termite hole. The termites crawled onto the grass. Then, the chimp took the grass out of the hole and ate all the termites.”

Second, without her observations and discoveries, people would not know that these animals are very similar to humans. Like us, they express their emotions with facial and body gestures. They can be happy, angry, sad, or mad. The text on page 115 states the following: “Goodall saw them attack and eat small monkeys, not out of hunger, but because they didn't want them around.” This observation supports the fact that chimpanzees are very intelligent and have complex relationships.

In conclusion, Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees made important contributions to science and to our understanding of this primate species.

Jane Goodall is one of the most important primatologists of our time. Her work has helped people understand chimpanzees in new ways.

In the article, paragraph 4 states that Goodall spent 45 years studying chimpanzees in the wild and that her discoveries changed the way people think about primates. People had misconceptions about chimpanzees before Goodall studied them. People believed that chimpanzees were herbivores. Goodall discovered that chimpanzees actually like to eat meat, not just plants. She also learned that they make and use tools in their everyday lives, which shows how intelligent they are. This supports my claim that Goodall has made many significant contributions to science.

In addition to Goodall’s studies, the article states that she is also an activist who teaches young people how to protect animals and has won many awards for her work in protecting chimpanzees. As an activist, Goodall worked to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. She teaches others about the damage that can be done to their habitats with hunting and pollution. The many awards for her work demonstrate the direct impact Goodall has had on our understanding of how to protect chimpanzees.

In conclusion, Jane Goodall has made a significant impact in how people view and study chimpanzees. Without Goodall’s work, we would likely still have many misconceptions about chimpanzees.

Ms. Herrera

6/17/2025

Jane Goodall

In my opinion, I think Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees made an important contribution to science because of the many new discoveries she made about primates and their behavior. Her research changed the way people view animals and taught scientists that chimpanzees share many similarities with humans. Because of her contributions and observations, we now know much more about how intelligent and emotional chimpanzees really are.
For example, in paragraph five, the text states that Jane Goodall discovered that chimpanzees were very intelligent animals. She observed them making and using tools, such as using blades made from grass to collect and eat ants. This was surprising because, before her discovery, many scientists believed that only humans had the ability to create and use tools. This important finding helped scientists realize that chimpanzees have problem-solving skills and are capable of thinking in complex ways, which made scientists rethink what makes humans different from animals.
Another example from the text is in paragraph eight, where it states that Goodall also discovered that chimpanzees experience emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and frustration. She observed them attacking smaller monkeys, not because they needed food, but because they didn’t want those animals around in their space. This showed that chimpanzees could feel and act based on emotions, not just instincts. By learning this, scientists began to see that chimpanzees express many of the same feelings as humans, which helps us better understand both their behavior and our own.
In conclusion, Jane Goodall’s discoveries taught scientists important lessons about chimpanzees’ intelligence and emotions. Her work made a huge contribution to science by helping people see how much humans and chimpanzees have in common.

The author explains that before Goodall’s work, people thought chimpanzees were herbivores. Another example of Goodall’s contribution to science was her observing the chimpanzees' behavior.

Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees made an important contribution to science. Before Goodall’s work, people thought that chimpanzees were herbivores. But she discovered that chimpanzees eat meat too. Also, Goodall discovered that chimpanzees use tools just like humans. For example, chimpanzees use a blade of grass into a termite hole to catch these insects. In conclusion, Jane Goodall’s work with chimpanzees has made important contributions to science.
