Scientists believe that Alzheimer's is caused by a many factors including genetics, lifestyle, and environment. All these factors can effect the brain in different ways. Alzheimer's is also associated with plaques, build up of protein fragments between nerve cells, and tangles, twisted fibers of proteins. But no clear connection has been made.

Though no cure currently exists, medication such as cholinesterase inhibitors help reduce the cognitive symptoms. Since Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, the brain cells die as the symptoms worsen. Existing medication cannot stop the damage already done, but it can stabilize and slow down the process. Other medication is available to treat behavioral symptoms based on the patient (anger, depression, anxiety, etc.)
