In the book Copper Sun by, Sharon Draper, a girl named Amari lives in a little village with her people in Africa. She had an amazing life with her family and she was about to get married to a guy named Besa. Until one day they found out that there were some unknown people coming to their village so they decided to throw them a party to welcome them. Not too long into the party, the unknown people started attacking them and shooting their people. Amari looked around and all her family was dead and she was put into handcuffs. They were then all hooked together and had to walk very long, with very little water and food. All Amari could think about was how she had nothing left all her family was gone and her whole village was burnt down. Finally, they got to this new place but Amari doesn't know where it is and she is locked up with a bunch of women. There are a lot of different languages being spoken but she finds one girl named Afi who speaks her language, she took care of Amari, made sure she was well-fed, and was very kind to her. Another woman starts trying to explain to all of the women why they are there because they are all going to be sold as slaves. Then they are taken out to this beach area and are boarded onto a boat. They are on these boats for days and days, cramped next to one another, and have very little food and water. Many of the people died on the journey to the United States. While on the boat there was a red-headed man who would help Amari, he was very kind to her. He would help her to learn English so she could understand what they were saying, she caught on pretty quickly. Once they made it to the United States they were then sold, Amari was sold to a man named Mr.Derby. There was another new girl who worked there named Polly who was new as well. Polly at first didn't like Amari and didn't understand why her first assignment was to teach her English she just wanted to work in the main house. There were also a mom and a son who were slaves as well, Tidbit and Teenie. Every night Mr. Derby's son, Clay, would take Amari into his room late at night Amari always hated it she hoped for the day it would stop. One day Mr.Derby's wife Mrs.Derby was about to have her baby and the doctor wasn't there yet so Mr.Derby asked Polly and Amari if they could deliver the baby and they said yes. When Amari delivered the baby the baby was black and they knew that if Mr.Derby saw he would kill them all. Mrs.Derby said that she had been in love with their slave named Noah for a long time and so it was his baby. So they planned to tell Mr.Derby that she had a miscarriage but then hide the baby with Polly and Amari. But Clay found out and told his dad so Mr.Derby killed Noah and the baby right in front of Mrs.Derby and said he was going to sell Amari and Polly was don't working for him. So when the doctor finally arrived and he was told by Mr.Derby to take them back. While they were on the road back he stopped and told him that he didn't believe in slavery and that he would give them a chance to escape but it wouldn't be an easy journey. So they then set off to the South to Fort Mose, which they heard about from a friend and there you can be free. Their journey was very rough and they had many challenges. One example of having a hard time is, " The alligator, close to ten feet long, moved with unbelievable speed, but Polly was even faster. She shrieked and scrambled away up the riverbank. The sound of the alligator's jaws snapping together on nothing but air encouraged all three of them to run wildly into the edge of the woods." (280). There were times when they were caught, then helped, and then betrayed, but somehow they made it. When they got there the people were very welcoming and they helped Amari Polly and Tidbit find a way they could help in their little village. Then Amari found out she was pregnant she was very nervous at first but then realized everything will be ok. I think the theme of this story is to persevere and not lose hope. Amari and a lot of the other characters went through so many difficult challenges, but they never gave up no matter how hard it was. For example, Draper writes, "'No. I have not. I have been raped. I have been beaten. I have been made to feel like I am nothing. But I live."' (257). Readers can learn a lot from hearing what has happened in the past. For example, by reading this book it can educate you to know how wrong it was that slaves were a thing and how unfairly they were treated.

Neil

There is almost no historical inaccuracy in the copper sun except there are no copper heads in South Carolina. So Clay and the slaves in the pool would have not been bitten by the copperhead. Other than that the only inaccuracy is that the events would be very highly unlikely. First of all, an escaped slave would not get caught, the sailors usually do not help the slaves, there were almost no mixed children, and it took them more than a month to get to Florida but on maps, it takes less than a week.

Copper Sun is a good representation of slavery. Just reading the book alone can help a reader understand slavery extremely better. However, since the book is fiction, some of the events would most likely not happen. But the overall representation of what a slaves journey, and life on a plantation, is very accurate. It demonstrates the hardships like assault, sexual violence, and the mental blocks that slaves would go through. It represents what traveling on a boat through the middle passage was like, as well as what the biding and selling of a slave was like. This book shows readers the sad truth of what slavery was, and why it should never be brought back.

Another book similar to Copper Sun is Night by Elie Wiesel. Both books include examples of dehumanization and discrimination. While Night is about the Holocaust and Copper Sun is about slavery, both demonstrate the hardships of dehumanizing experiences.

There are many scenes in Copper Sun that show accurate historical details. For example, one is when Amari was taken from her home to the United States to be sold. They were all squished right next to each other. There were different levels of people so the people on the bottom had urine, throwup, and other nasty things on them. In the book, they also have a man be super kind to Amari, he helped her to learn some English and made sure she had food. But, most of the time the men were not that kind to them. I don't think that was a mistake though I think they put that in their to show that not everyone was for slavery.

Copper Sun is a book that has many minor and or side characters and only a handful of important ones and even then there are many traits that these characters have that colloid with the expectation of the time. The easiest and most prominent of the bunch is our main charterer, Amari, Amari is a strong-willed sprite who despite being knocked down can always finds strength through the memory of her desist family. This is clearly something that challenges the expectation of the time, Amari is sold as a slave and is expected to be submissive and obedient, Amari is also very intelligent and clever despite her illiteracy. On the other hand, there are some side characters that add complexity to the main narrative, two of these being Mr. Derby and his son Clay Darby. Throughout the story, the book does not into depth with the characters and they act as foils to the main cast and story.
