         <description><![CDATA[<p>Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.</p><p><br></p><p>Is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly diagnosed in childhood and can continue into adulthood. It can affect various aspects of life such as; education, work performance and relationships. </p><p><br></p><p>Symptoms:</p><ul><li><p>Inattention </p></li><li><p>Hyperactivity </p></li><li><p>Impulsiveness</p></li><li><p>Poor Focus </p></li><li><p>Poor Organisation Skills </p></li><li><p>Difficulty in regulating emotions</p></li></ul><p>There is no cure for ADHD, but it can be managed. </p><p>Management strategies include: </p><ul><li><p>Behaviour Management </p></li><li><p>Medication</p></li><li><p>Support from educational professionals </p></li><li><p>Support from mental health professionals </p></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>ADHD in Education</strong></p><p>Students with ADHD may have difficulty staying focused on tasks and experience trouble when following instructions and completing assignments. </p><p>They have a tendency to fidget, day dream and struggle to stay seated. </p><p>Students diagnosed with ADHD display symptoms of interrupting others, blurting out answers, difficulty taking turns. </p><p><br></p><p><strong>How can we support in education?</strong></p><ul><li><p><strong>Hands-on-activities</strong> - experiments, building models. This keeps their hands busy and minds engaged.</p></li><li><p><strong>Movement Breaks</strong> -  Give frequent short breaks where students can move around and stretch their legs. </p></li><li><p><strong>Interactive Lesson</strong> - Use technology, like educational apps to make it more engaging. Using games and quizzes can also be highly effective. </p></li><li><p><strong>Structured Tasks</strong> - Break down instructions into smaller chunks. </p></li><li><p><strong>Peer Tutoring</strong> - Buddying with a friend can provide peer support and motivate and help student with understanding. </p></li><li><p><strong>Flexible Seating</strong> - Allows student to find a space where they will work best. </p></li><li><p><strong>Mindfulness Activities </strong>- Incorporate short mindfulness exercises or breathing techniques to help the students manage stress and improve focus. </p></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Links to subject specialism</strong></p><p>Performing Arts - Students would typically thrive in the movement based environment, with shorter chunks of information. However, challenges such as hyperactivity and zoning out will create a potential safety risk. </p><p>Sciences - Biggest challenge would be to keep on task. Would need to use more of the strategies, such as using smaller chunks of information and using more creative activities such as experiments. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting how people think, interact and experience things. </p></li><li><p>Varies a lot in severity</p></li><li><p>Common traits include:</p><p>    - Social Challenges (social cues, eye contact)</p><p>     - Communication (from non-verbal to highly verbal)</p><p>      - Repetitive behaviours and interests</p><p>     -  Sensory sensitivities (to sounds, light, texture, smells)</p></li><li><p>This can affect learning by their struggles with</p><p>     - communication (expressing, understanding, participation, collaboration)</p><p>       - Focus &amp; Attention (hyper-focus on certain things, not engaging with things they're not as interested in)</p><p>        - Sensory processing (focusing can be difficult especially if there are bright lights, loud noises, uncomfortable textures)</p><p>        - Preference for routine</p></li><li><p>Autism can be adapted to by</p><p>    - Providing visual supports</p><p>     - Giving clear instructions</p><p>     - Routines</p><p>     - Sensory - friendly environment </p><p>     - Positive reinforcement</p><p>     - Flexible teaching methods </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Attention Deficit Disorder. </p><p> </p><p>It’s an older term that primarily referred to inattentive-type ADHD, where the hyperactivity component is less prominent or absent.</p><p><br></p><p>Symptoms: </p><ul><li><p>Difficulty sustaining attention </p></li><li><p>Forgetfulness </p></li><li><p>Disorganisation </p></li><li><p>Avoidance of Mental Effort - Reluctance to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort, like homework and paper work. </p></li><li><p>Easily Distracted </p></li><li><p>Poor Listening Skills </p></li><li><p>Frequent Mistakes </p></li><li><p>Difficulty Following Instructions</p></li><li><p>Hyperfocus - Becoming so engrossed in a task that other responsibilities are neglected.</p></li></ul><p><strong>Supporting students with ADD </strong></p><ul><li><p><strong>Structed Environment - </strong>Establish a clear routine and expectations to provide stability. </p></li><li><p><strong>Break Tasks into Smaller Steps</strong> - Dividing assignments into smaller chunks. </p></li><li><p><strong>Visual Aids and Reminders</strong> - Use charts, checklists to help students keep track of deadlines. </p></li><li><p><strong>Positive Reinforcement</strong> - Provide frequent praise and rewards for effort and progress. Celebrating smaller wins. </p></li><li><p><strong>Relaxation Techniques</strong> - Teach strategies to manage stress and improve focus such as deep breathing, walking and mindfulness exercises. </p></li><li><p><strong>Parental Collaboration</strong> - Work closely with parents/carers to share strategies and ensure consistent support at home and school. </p></li><li><p><strong>LSA Support</strong> - Giving students that one-to-one support. </p></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Linking to subject specialism</strong></p><p>Performing Arts - Students with ADD, would again typically thrive in this subject. They would benefit from group collaborations, positive reinforcement, and the use of LSAs. The challenges would potentially be receiving negative/developmental feedback and emotional outbursts from that. </p><p><br></p><p>Sciences - Students would need to be engaged through hands on experiments/hands on activities. The use of visual aids and the integration of technology (youtube videos) would allow for visual stimulation. Using short varied tasks to develop understanding would allow students diagnosed with ADD to stay engaged and develop knowledge within the subject. The use of collaborative projects to encourage peer collaboration and keep the student on task. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Includes a frequent and ongoing pattern of anger, irritability, arguing and defiance toward parents and other authority figures.</p><p><br/></p><p>Emotional and behavioural symptoms of ODD generally last at least six months and generally begin during preschool years.</p><p><br/></p><p>The symptoms usually include:</p><p>Often easily lose temper,</p><p>Easily annoyed by others,</p><p>Is often angry and resentful.</p><p><br/></p><p>ODD causes severe problems with relationships, social activities, school and work, for both the child and the family.</p><p><br/></p><p>ODD is placed in 3 categories:</p><p><strong>Mild - </strong>symptoms occur in one setting</p><p><strong>Moderate - </strong>symptoms occur in 2 settings.</p><p><strong>Severe - </strong>occurs in three or more settings.</p><p><br/></p><p>A high percentage of people with autism also display traits of ODD. However, it isn't directly linked as people are often diagnosed ODD without being diagnosed as autistic.</p><p><br/></p><p>Classroom:</p><p><br/></p><ul><li><p>seating&nbsp;closer to the teacher to avoid disrupting other students</p></li><li><p>breaks from classroom activities when they feel overwhelmed</p></li><li><p>more time to complete assignments</p></li><li><p>to consult with a school counselor or psychologist</p></li></ul>]]></description>
