In this multi-use activity created by Kari Bolt, students are able to choose between a police officer, a firefighter, an army soldier, and a chef. The students can then color their hats, and wear them. This is an engaging way for students to imagine themselves as a community helper and create their own hat or helmet to wear during dramatic play.

Classroom use: students can participate in this activity individually and get creative! They can color in their own community helper hat and then use it to act out a scenario with their peers in a dramatic play area. These can be kept in their own folders or cubbies for future use in the classroom.

In this song written by Rachel Lukacsko, students can reinforce their understanding of how community helpers help the community! It is a simple and short song that is sung to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" which many students know. If students do not know the tune, it can be easily taught.

Classroom use: this song would be useful to sing throughout the Community Helpers Unit. This song can be sung daily, or during a group circle time.

Community Helpers Video

In this video by PBS Kids, students are able to understand the importance of community helpers. The title "Everyone's Job is Important" can be emphasized to students and would be a great follow up to the Here Come the Helpers book by Leslie Kimmelman. This video also reinforces that students can be active helpful members in their community and do not necessarily have to work for the community. At the end of the video, Daniel Tiger is seen helping his mother set the table which can be a powerful message to students that helping can be a small effort at home, as well.

Classroom use: this video is versatile and can be used as part of a community helpers unit. It can be used at the beginning of a mini lesson or at the beginning of the unit. Students can watch this video after a discussion about community helpers and why their work is important to the community.

Community Helpers Puzzle

In a puzzle game created by Ms. Lulu, students are able to match up the correct community helper to the place they work. This is an excellent resource for students because it enables them to practice their knowledge of where these community helpers work and where they might find them. For example, the librarian is a community helper and he/she would be found working at the library.

Classroom use: this activity would be excellent for students to do in small center groups. They can work collaboratively to identify which community helpers work at the matching locations and is a good resource for reinforcing what students know about community helpers.

Here Come the Helpers

Here Come the Helpers is a short children's board book written by Leslie Kimmelman that describes different community helpers to children. The book begins by describing the world as an awesome place, but that sometimes there are emergencies. The book then names various community helpers (police officers, firefighters, tow-truck workers, EMT workers, etc.) and how they can help. For instance, in the book there is an illustration of a traffic police officer directing traffic. This is a great resource for kids because everything is clearly labeled - the words on the page are not overwhelming, all the community helper titles are written and all the illustrations show what the helpers are responsible for.

Classroom use: this book would be ideal for introducing community helpers to the class. Perhaps this would be a good way to end a circle time discussion where students might share any knowledge they have about community helpers. This book would be a great resource to keep in the library at all times for students to access it whenever.
