Law declares freedom of worship, political and religious leaders say otherwise. Government supports anti-conversion program. Influenced by Portuguese and Dutch traders, European from Great Britain. Known as Ceylon in 1796. Conflict between Sinhalese and Tamils for independence going on for decades. Signed Norwegian-brokered cease-fire in February 2002. Fighting again in 2006, Sri Lankan defeated Tamil forces in 2009. Working to bring reconciliation between the two.&nbsp;</li></ul>]]></description>
