وهي ثلاثة ألوان فقط تتمثل في
الأحمر  ـ الأزرق ـ الأصفر .. وتسمى بهذا الاسم لسببين هما:
1ـ إذا مزجناها مع بعضها البعض تعطي ألوان أخرى.
2ـ لا نستطيع أن نستخرجها مهما مزجنا من ألوان.

2)الألوان الثانوية او الفرعية:

 و هي ثلاثة ألوان نحصل عليها إثر مزج الألوان الأساسية مع بعضها البعض و تتمثل في :
البرتقالي ـ الأخضر ـ البنفسجي تستخرج حسب القاعدة الآتية:
لون أساسي + لون أساسي آخر = لون ثنائي
و إذا ما طبقت القاعدة على الألوان تصبح النتيجة كالآتي:
1 ـ أحمر وردي + أصفر ليمي = برتقالي
2 ـ أصفر ليمي + أزرق = أخضر
3 ـ أزرق + أحمر وردي = بنفسجي

3) الألوان الثلاثية (الوسطية) او المشتقة :

 و هي ستة ألوان نحصل عليها إثر مزج الألوان الأساسية مع الألوان الثنائية و هي كالآتي:
1ـ الأصفر الطيني ( برتقالي فاتح )
2ـ البرتقالي الأحمر ( الأحمر الآجواني)
3ـالأخضر المصفر
4ـ الأخضر المزرق ( الأخضر الزمردي )
5ـ البنفسجي الوردي
6ـ الأزرق البنفسجي

ويتم الحصول على هذه الألوان حسب القاعدة الآتية:
لون أساسي + لون ثنائي = لون ثلاثي
1) أصفر + برتقالي = اصفر طيني
2) أحمر + برتقالي = برتقالي أحمر
3) أصفر + أخضر = أخضر مصفر
4) أزرق + أخضر = أخضر مزرق
5) أحمر + بنفسجي = بنفسجي وردي
6) أزرق + بنفسجي = بنفسجي أزرق
